Laurent Ponsot Cuvee du Cedre Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2017 - First Bottle

Reviews

94 John Gilman -
Laurent Ponsot’s Clos Vougeot is from the same source as he used in his last several years at Domaine Ponsot so the only thing that has changed here is the name and color of the label. This is a very very good in 2017 offering up a superb nose of red and black cherries pigeon a fine base of soil woodsmoke and mustard seed. On the palate the wine is deep full-bodied and sappy at the core with very impressive transparency ripe suave tannins and a long complex and vibrant finish of impeccable balance. (Drink between 2026-2065)

This cuvée comes from four grape sources. Glowing attractive mid purple lots of energy plenty of rich red fruit strawberries as well as raspberries but then becomes much stricter at the back. An engaging rather than noble Clos de Vougeot. Tasted: November 2018.

Huge, lasting shockwaves reverberated across Burgundy when Laurent Ponsot left his family’s revered Domaine Ponsot in early 2017 along with his son, Clement. He labored for nearly four decades there, and critics wondered aloud whether he had the ability to start a new domaine from scratch. Luckily for us, some of his iconic fruit sources came with him, including the fruit for this remarkable Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru. Now, a few years in, his new domaine is thriving – with seven hectares of prime Burgundy vineyards and a style that is both traditional and ever-evolving. Under $400 for Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is actually a stunning price for top-notch Burgundy, and you can’t find a bottle here in the USA for much less than $600 anywhere else! ($599.96 to be exact!) Burgundy and bargain hunting rarely go hand in hand – especially at the Grand Cru level – but there is no denying… this is a rare steal that is sure to impress for years to come! Read the critic’s take below, but I implore you to read as quickly as you can… only 2 cases to be had!

About the Producer

Laurent Ponsot left the family estate, Domaine Ponsot, back in 2017 and follow his passion of creating his own label. Laurent as well as his son, Clement, continue the legacy and tradition of crafting world renowned wines at the new estate. Laurent is an innovator and belives in minimum additions and protection of authenticity of each bottle. Since 2018, each bottle is equipped with a chip to allow the consumer to check the authenticity of each bottle (if you have seen Sour Grapes, you would know why). Each of his wines is inspired by a different flora after his respect for nature. The Vougeot bottle "Cuvee de Cedre" is named after, you guessed it, the cedar tree.
