Sottimano Barbaresco Cotta 2019 - First Bottle

Reviews

96 Wine Enthusiast -
Cellar Selection - Dark spice, forest floor, rose and new leather aromas shape the nose along with a whiff of wild berry on this fragrant, radiant red. Tightly wound and linear, the focused palate offers red cherry, licorice and toasted nut alongside firm tannins and racy acidity. Austere and elegant, it needs time to fully develop. Drink 2029–2039.
95 James Suckling -
Extremely perfumed and bright, with ripe strawberry, orange peel and white truffle. Some roses, too. Full-bodied with layers of ripe fruit and excellent structure behind. This is a fantastic Barbaresco for the vintage.
94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
Slightly more subdued on first nose, the Sottimano 2019 Barbaresco Cottá is the kind of wine that will deliver its best results when it has had time to flesh out and evolve. You can taste the freshness and the tightness of the primary fruit in this vintage, along with plenty of wild cherry and crushed rose. Spicy oak tones emerge carefully as the wine warms in the glass.
94 Wine Spectator -
The fruit expression of this wine is dark, with black cherry and blackberry flavors that are backed by vivid acidity and mingle with tar and underbrush. Delivers powerful tannins that dominate the finish, though they're not overly astringent. Still, this lacks the harmony of the best at this stage and will require additional time to find its sweet spot. Best from 2026.
94 Wine & Spirits -
Fruit from the Sottimano family’s oldest vines yielded this firmly mineral wine. Its tangy sour-cherry flavors feel cool and crunchy, edged with notes of subtle spice and savory hints. The flavors begin to harmonize as the wine sits in the glass, gaining brightness and verve that suggest a long life ahead.

Cottà is one of Neive’s most revered areas, long used for the production of single vineyard wines. This tightly structured and incredibly elegant Barbaresco is classically perfumed and exceptionally bright, with a youthful austerity that promises to expand in time. This was chosen as a “Cellar Selection” by Wine Enthusiast to go along their 96 point score – but the reward is worth the wait – as even a few minutes swirling in the glasses opens this up beautifully, revealing an impressive concentration and complexity to rival Barbarescos twice the price!

About the Producer

Andrea Sottimano and his father Rino produce wines of outstanding quality from thirteen hectares in the Cotta, Curra, Fausoni, Pajore and Basarin crus in the Treiso and Neive townships.
