Cascina Adelaide Barolo Cannubi 2017 - First Bottle

Reviews

96 James Suckling -
Such beautiful aromas of plums and fresh oranges here, as well as cut flowers. Full-bodied with a solid core of fruit and ultra-fine tannins that go on for a very long time. A gorgeous wine with subtle class. Drink in 2024 and onwards.
94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
Cascina Adelaide is based in the town of Barolo and is part of an elite group of vintners with access to Cannubi fruit, one of the most prized vineyard sites in the appellation. The 2017 Barolo Cannubi is distinguished by a delicate embroidery of fruit, with a dusting of mineral and ash that lift gently from the bouquet. You'll notice background tones of blue flower and sweet spice. I really love the evolving style and newfound elegance being proposed by this estate. This was a 4,500-bottle release.
94 Wine Enthusiast -
Violet, iris, wild berry and camphor aromas are front and center. Smooth and full-bodied, the delicious, elegant palate delivers crushed Morello cherry, raspberry compote and baking spice alongside tightly knit but refined tannins. Drink 2024–2029.
93 Wine Spectator -
There is a nice counterpoint between the strawberry and cherry flavors and balsamic notes of juniper, eucalyptus and rosemary. Firm, yet graceful, with a line of resonant tannins underneath. An iron note chimes in on the aftertaste. Best from 2024 through 2042. 670 cases made, 300 cases imported.
90 Raffaele Vecchione -
Cherries, marasca cherry, lemon peel, wild thyme and rosemary in one of the most Mediterranean expressions of the tasting. Medium to full body, well extracted and smooth ripe tannins and a very drinkable finish. How beautiful. Delicious right away.

Cascina Adelaide, one of our all-time favorite Barolo producers, makes complex, approachable, world-class wines, and WE have the inside line. We absolutely scored on this 96 POINT single Cru Barolo – that just so happens to be the revered CANNUBI!

In 1999, owner Amabile Droco purchased an old farmhouse in the heart of Barolo village, made a considerable investment in new production equipment, and added a new state-of-the-art gravity-fed winery building to the property, tucked just beneath the hilltop Castello di Barolo. They now own top sites in eight out of the ten Barolo “Crus”, and continue to be an ever-higher-achieving star on the rise. The Cannubi hill is sacred ground, of course, and Cascina’s incredibly fine, lifted, perfumey, and polished wine will last for decades. Luckily, in the warm and generous 2017 vintage, this wine also shows enough softness to drink early...as we have done for the past two days here at the office.

We are one of the very few in the U.S. to have UNPRECEDENTED access to their top wines, and we purchase every bottle they agree to sell us. Truly, this pricing is remarkable, and the wine...even more so! 96 POINTS and just a surreal treat of top-notch Barolo!

The wine is a classic, old-school style of nebbiolo. The nose zings with violets, iris, and rose petal notes, with hints of cherries and plums rounding out the aromas. The expansive, silky palate is loaded with crushed raspberries, orange peel, deep cherries, and cranberries, plus anise seed, balsam, mineral ash, and a long, endless finish. Absolutely solid – as we’ve come to expect from the fine folks at Cascina Adelaide. Decant for thirty minutes for early drinking, or simply take your time with the wine and watch it blossom over the course of an evening. Just wicked, awesome stuff.

All of Cascina Adelaide’s grapes are hand harvested and sorted before a 12-hour stay in the winery’s drying room to remove any residual moisture on the grapes. From there, the fruit is destemmed and lightly crushed in preparation for their roughly two-week fermentation and maceration in tank. Following primary, the wine is aged for 24 months in oak barrels, where secondary fermentation occurs. The wine is then bottled for 3 years of further aging before release.

As we noted above, we simply love it! This winery continues to just BLOW UP in the press, and we are beyond stoked to have gotten in early! Read the press below, but don’t delay, this is a CRAZY good price. 37% OFF?!?! Just JUMP all over this...go!

About the Producer

After a highly successful engineering career, Amabile Droco achieved his lifetime's ambition when he purchased an old farmhouse and the accompanying vineyards in the heart of the village of Barolo in 1999. The employment of a top new winemaking team and the construction of an incredible new subterranean winery had a predictably positive effect on the quality of the wines produced. What really sets Cascina Adelaide apart, however, is their vineyard holdings and their commitment to demonstrating the diversity of the terroirs within the Barolo DOCG. Journalists have been quick to recognize the fantastic quality of the wines with a number of the wines awarded 95 points from Wine Spectator as well as consistently coming out on top in Decanter tastings. The Fossati Cru is located in the La Morra area, where the soil is rich of red and grey clay. This place is well-known as a great cru for great Barolo wines that can be aged for decades.
