Domaine Thierry Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin Vigne Belle 2019
Ah, Gevrey-Chambertin...one of the most reliable, beautiful village Burgundies out there. Thierry Mortet has become one of the major players in the region since inheriting half of his father’s estate (Domaine Mortet Charles & Fils) in the early 90s. This purely balanced red Burgundy is a fantastic value for Gevrey-Chambertin and a worthy addition for any Burghound looking to add to a collection. Over 30% OFF and from the fantastic 2019 vintage? Let's go!
Located in the heart of the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, in the Côte de Nuits, between Dijon and Nuits-Saint-Georges, you’ll find the domaine of Thierry Mortet - officially created in 1992, when Thierry's father retired and the family estate was divided between his two sons. In the last three decades, the vineyard holdings have grown from four hectares to just over eight – spread across the four villages of Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny, Couchey, and Daix (west of Dijon).
This wine hails from a combined 0.65 hectares of two plots in a single vineyard known as “Vigne Belle” or “Beautiful Vines” – set just outside the village proper. Thierry had converted entirely to organic farming by 2007, and the wines have only grown in quality over the years, especially from this parcel. Here, 15-35-year-old vines grown on limestone and clay soils produce one of the finest expressions of Gevrey-Chambertin terroir in the entire AOC zone. While the yields in 2019 were down significantly across all of Burgundy, late-season conditions here allowed for beautiful, focused, and sumptuous Burgundy that we are thrilled to share with you. Most of this tiny production never leaves France, and what little does is virtually exclusive to restaurants...so a handful of cases for us is an absolute score!
The wine purrs with delicate and aromatic notes of cherries, new leather, and chocolate shavings. The mouthfeel is supremely well-integrated with variations of cherries, raspberries, and strawberries in the forefront, followed by dusty cocoa notes and earthy spice. This is silky and smooth with elegant acidity carefully woven throughout. Undoubtedly a wine that whispers rather than shouts, but what a seductive whisper it is! Not much to be had, and this is a remarkable Burgundy - especially at our price!
