Is there a more iconic North American wine than Ridge’s Monte Bello? I’d argue no. Since 1885, Ridge has been tending vines way up on a ridge high in the Santa Cruz Mountains. They made waves in the now famous 1976 Judgement of Paris, and then again 30 years later in the 2006 re-tasting – in which they placed first, by the way. This new release was a delight to taste – with a promise of greatness to come.

In 1885, Osea Perrone, an Italian immigrant and doctor living in San Francisco purchased 180 acres near the top of Monte Bello Ridge. The first vintage came seven years later in 1892, and over the past 140+ years, Ridge has grown to become one of the strongest wine brands in the entire world. The vineyards were scarcely maintained and all but abandoned during Prohibition, with 8 new acres planted as a new beginning for the property in 1949. The first proper iteration of this wine didn’t come about until 1962 – but ever since, the myth and legend of this world-class wine has grown.

In the glass, aromas of white sage and cedar flitter about delicately, almost tickling the nose with intrigue. From there flows the rich and creamy sensations of vanilla bean and milk chocolate, followed by red plums and blackberries, pine needles, leather, and sandalwood. It is intensely structured but nevertheless elegant and silky – but the bones to age are all there. 100% American oak adds to the lightly herbal and dusty finish – an extension that deftly adds even further complexity and length. We’ll proudly stand behind this new release – but only secured 45 bottles to share! Make an icon yours today, and proudly reap the benefits for years to come!

About the Producer

The history of Ridge Vineyards begins in 1885, when Osea Perrone, a doctor who became a prominent member of San Francisco's Italian community, bought 180 acres near the top of Monte Bello Ridge. He terraced the slopes and planted vineyards; using native limestone, he constructed the Monte Bello Winery, producing the first vintage under that name in 1892. This unique cellar, built into the mountainside on three levels, is Ridge's production facility. At 2600', it is surrounded by the upper vineyard, now referred to as the Perrone Ranch.
