Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville 2019 (Magnum 1.5L) - First Bottle

Reviews

100 Decanter -
Power and intensity balanced by so much freshness, tension and energy – quite remarkable. Aromas lead with beautifully delineated black and blue fruits, pops of red berries, coupled with fresh violets and rose petals, black liquorice and sagebrush. Broad and mouthfilling with a lovely mid-palate density and ultra-fine-grained tannins that are rounded, long, and focused. Perfectly complete with a long finish punctuated by chaparral, dried herbs and spearmint. Shows the trademark freshness and depth that Screaming Eagle wines offer year after year.
100 Vinous -
The 2019 Screaming Eagle is a wine of mind-blowing elegance and finesse that stands apart from the generally more potent style of so many wines in this vintage. Deep, sensual and beautifully layered, the 2019 is simply magnificent from the very first taste. A whole range of red/purplish fruit, spice, leather, dried herb and blood orange accents give the 2019 its vivid, wonderfully detailed personality. Because of its price, both on release and in the secondary market, Screaming Eagle is the most talked about wine in Napa Valley. It is hype or not? All I can say is that I was very fortunate to drink a number of older vintages during lockdown and all those wines lived up to their reputations
99 James Suckling -
Lots of crushed berries, such as raspberries and blackberries, with spearmint and crushed stone, as well as redcurrants. Full-bodied with regal tannins that build on the palate as you taste it and flow over like a gentle waterfall. Such a beautiful, subtle and graceful texture. Best after 2027.
98 Jeb Dunnuck -
The Grand Vin 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is reminiscent of the 2016, and possibly the 2014, with its beautiful balance, purity, and straight-up class. Offering remarkable purity in its crème de cassis, wildflower, spice, lead pencil, and tobacco-like aromas and flavors, it’s medium to full-bodied, has flawless balance, and building, silky tannins. It’s a thrillingly complete, classic Screaming Eagle that won’t hit maturity for another 7-8 years and I suspect will have 40 to 50 years of overall longevity.

"Let’s start with the bottom line: the cab lives up to its reputation. Screaming Eagle’s 2019 epitomizes the magic of a Californian Cabernet Sauvignon. You’ll get dark fruit, blood orange, fresh herbs, stone, elegance, complexity, and all of the accolades that come along with what’s probably the most revered winery in the United States."

About the Producer

What can we say about Screaming Eagle you don’t already know? Well, here’s a cool anecdote, maybe: back in the day (1988 or so) Jean Phillips (the original SE owner) and Ren Harris (of Paradigm) owned a real estate firm together and their friend Heidi Barrett was helping both of them make wine (Jean literally in a plastic garbage can back then). They would at times each make a 50% contribution of wine and bottle it to GIVE to clients as gifts and as a kind of business card. The label had their names, and the titles “Landbrokers”. We have a bottle of the 1992 in our company cellar -- an incredibly rare and basically priceless wine as the 1992 Screaming Eagle, of course, is a legend that launched 1000 “cult wine” ships! Most of these now rare bottle were probably consumed right away -- hard to imagine these days!
