Lail Vineyards Blueprint Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2021 - First Bottle

Reviews

94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Blueprint comes from multiple vineyards across the Napa Valley but draws most heavily upon Rutherford. The separate lots are blended after approximately 12 months in barrel, then allowed to marry for a few months prior to bottling. Fruit-forward scents of blueberries, cassis and black cherries mark the nose, while the balanced, medium to full-bodied palate is silky, fine and elegant, with just the right amount of ripe, savory tannins on the finish. In the context of Napa Valley Cabernet, it's a terrific value.
94 Wine Enthusiast -
Baked fruits and toasty oak aromas lead to richly layered blackberries, blueberries and cocoa in this full-bodied and warmly tannic wine. Aged in 50-% new French barrels, it is well structured for aging and has the concentration to match. Best from 2028-2038.
93 Vinous -
Crème de cassis, chocolate, spice, new leather and cloves are all kicked up in this juicy, flamboyant, plush Cabernet. The Blueprint is made from a collection of top sites on Napa Valley. Best of all, it remains a fabulous value.
93 Jeb Dunnuck -
Always a classic Cabernet based around Rutherford fruit that delivers loads of bang for the buck, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Blueprint is going to be well worth your time. Currants, leather, tobacco, and dried herbs give way to a medium-bodied, round, mouth-filling, beautifully textured Cabernet that will drink nicely right out of the gate.

“In the context of Napa Valley Cabernet, it's a terrific value.” – Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate

Agreed. Robin Lail, of course, is a Napa legend – she literally grew up in a winery, as her family founded Inglenook Vineyards in 1879 thanks to her great-granduncle, the legendary Captain Gustave Niebaum, and brought to new levels of prominence by her father, John Daniel. Robin, for her part, was a founding partner at Dominus, before creating her eponymous Lail winery. Napa as we know it simply would not be the same without this family!

But, back to the deliciousness that is this cabernet sauvignon. Philippe Melka and Maayan Koschitzky, as always, just nail it, with the velvety structure and elegant roundness that has become their signature over the decades working with many of Napa’s top producers. Metric tons of black, red, and blue bramble berries, then chocolate shavings and mocha, clove and allspice, and a beautifully grounding note of sweet pipe tobacco and roasted culinary herbs. Elegant, plush, and youthfully exuberant – this drinks like something quite a bit more expensive. Under $90 for a Napa cab with this pedigree, and this quality, is incredibly rare these days, and this is without hesitation one of the top Under $100 Napa cabs to be found anywhere! This is a worthy wine that is strictly, severely allocated – most retailers are limited to a single case. We have the best virtual rolodex in the business, and managed to score 8 more cases that are prime for the taking...while they last, that is!

PAIRING IDEAS: I’m giving this a go with Vietnamese Shaking Beef, or Bò lúc lac – marinated cubes of delicious and tender beef, quickly sauteed with a smothering of various veggies. It’s quick, flavorful, and supremely delicious...just a perfect little meal to keep in your back pocket.

About the Producer

Robin Daniel Lail’s heritage began in 1879 with the founding of Inglenook Vineyards by her great-granduncle, the iconic Captain Gustave Niebaum. Robin is a legend, helping found Dominus and Merryvale, she is one of the most influential women in Napa Valley history and remains that way to this day. She saw the talent in a young Philippe Melka and hired him as winemaker, it was one of his very first gigs in Napa and has remained at the helm of winemaking ever since.
