Fratelli Alessandria Barolo Gramolere 2017 - First Bottle

Reviews

96 Wine Enthusiast -
Forest floor, sandalwood, wild rose and cedar aromas take shape in the glass. Savory, structured and poised, the palate is still young and primary, delivering ripe Morello cherry, spiced cranberry, licorice and ground clove set against a backbone of firm, fine-grained tannins. Drink 2025–2037.
95 Decanter -
Gramolere is close to Bussia but separated from it by a deep valley, and the soil originates from a different geology: we find Sant'Agata Fossili sandy marls in Gramolere and Diano d'Alba sandstone at the top of Bussia (Pianpolvere). If you prefer fruit-driven wines, this wine is worth a try. Gramolere is known to be restrained and austere, but here the nose is dominated by rhubarb root, rosehip, tar, and earthy clay minerality. Candied cherry and pomegranate juice flavours provide fruit concentration, while the tight-knit structure showcases chewy acidity and austere yet ripe tannins on the mid-palate, followed by a graceful watermelon finish. A great wine indeed.
95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
With some 7,000 bottles released, the Fratelli Alessandria 2017 Barolo Gramolere gives us a taste of fruit from Monforte d'Alba, as opposed to Verduno, where this winery is based. The Nebbiolo from this further-flung village shows deep power and equal grace, and you feel the contrast in this warm-vintage wine. This Barolo sits firmly on the palate with dark shades of cherry, blackcurrant and wild plum. These fruit tones cede to iron ore, rusty nail and dark licorice. This wine shows power and almost sanguine or earthy intensity.
94 Vinous -
The 2017 Barolo Gramolere is a powerful, tightly wound wine full of Monforte tension. Readers will have to be patient. Dark-fleshed fruit, spice, menthol, licorice and sage add layers of aromatic intrigue to this firm, hulky Barolo. The 2017 takes all the Gramolere signatures and turns up the volume.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!

THIS is one producer to jump on NOW. Still priced somewhere in reality, we just received our ‘17 allocation and the wines are truly astonishing. Barolo at this level from such a venerable producer should be in your cellar NOW!

Based in Verduno (THE up-and-coming commune), the Alessandria family has been crafting classic wines from great sites since the mid-19th century – wines with complexity without heaviness, and structure with finesse. Read the reviews below, but know that we personally think these are some of the treasures of Barolo - from the excellent Verduno bottling to the crus of Gramolere in Monforte d’Alba and the prestigious Monvigliero in Verduno... You cannot go wrong. Ultra-limited, of course!

About the Producer

At the northern edge of the Barolo zone, the Alessandria family, since the mid-19th century, has called this gentle landscape home. In 1870, when the family first established their farm, calling it Fratelli Alessandria, Verduno was the center of Barolo winemaking—it was here where families first crafted dry Nebbiolo wines in the style we know today. Today Verduno is experiencing a renaissance, and it is the “brothers” Alessandria who are guiding the wines of Verduno back to the heights they once held. It is of course a family affair—the brothers Gian Battista and Alessandro, and Alessandro’s son, Vittore, are the stewards of this generations-old estate.
