Domaine Marc Colin Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2018 - First Bottle

Reviews

95-97 Vinous -
The 2018 B?tard-Montrachet Grand Cru, which comes from Colin?s 0.19-hectare parcel of 35-year-old vines, has a stunning, beautifully focused bouquet that needs little encouragement to unleash citrus peel, limestone, sherbet lemon and yellow flowers. The palate is extremely well balanced with hints of lemon curd and almond on the entry, which dovetails into a rich but very delineated midpalate of vanilla and even a touch of coconut. This feels long and languorous in the mouth, and the finish lasts for over a minute. Fabulous. Three barrels produced.
93-95 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The 2018 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru was very put together when I tasted it, opening in the glass with notes of pear, Meyer lemon, white flowers, pastry cream and a deft application of new oak. On the palate, it's full-bodied, muscular and concentrated, with fine balance and a long, saline finish.
92-95 Burghound -
Once again there is a vague suggestion of the exotic to the beautifully layered nose that freely offers aromas of both white and yellow orchard fruit, acacia blossom, Asian-style tea and a hint of passion fruit. The sleekly muscular and overtly powerful broad-shouldered flavors coat the palate with dry extract while displaying outstanding length on the youthfully austere finish. As one would reasonably expect, this is quite tightly wound at present and will require at least 6 to 8 years to be approachable.

These are some of the most compelling white Burgs being made in France today, everything from their Aligote to their Montrachet is absolutely stellar and singing with mineral tension and tremendous balance with the stuffing to age for decades. Here is an illustrative quote from Damien Colin, who now controls the family domaine with his sister Caroline. "We continue to try to make tightly wound, energetic and built-to-age whites. I wouldn't call them old school in style, but we want them to age well and if that means sacrificing some early accessibility, we can live with that. Our clients like our approach and in that vein, we're using even less new wood than before. For example, for our St. Aubin 1ers it's no more than 15% while using 300-liter barrels and we use none at all for the Bâtard and Montrachet as we prefer to use one-year old barrels. We are also very conscientious about our yields because too low doesn't make for elegant and vibrant whites but too high is even worse as they lack texture. We have also now moved to an 18-month élevage period for all the whites, which allows them to clarify naturally so we no longer filter them. Overall, the idea is to make clean and transparent but vibrant wines that are age-worthy."

About the Producer

Domaine Marc Colin was founded in 1970 by Marc Colin and his wife Michele. The Domaine spans 15 hectares encompassing 26 appellations in St. Aubin, Chassagne, Puligny and Santenay and certain parcels have been in the family for more than 100 years. All of the domaines vineyards are situated on finely pitched hillsides resulting in wines with savory minerality and luster. Today the Domaine is ran by the next generation, Joseph, Caroline and Damien, the children of Marc and Michele. The domaine farms sustainably and organically, with most of the vineyards consisting of older vines, and clay-limestones soils that are just some of the shining qualities of this domaine. The vineyard was planted in 1982 and is made up of clay and limestone soils which makes for some elegant, full bodied and muscular chardonnay.
