Vina Cobos Bramare Lujan de Cuyo Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

92 James Suckling -
A focused and tight cabernet. Beautiful aromas and complexity with currants, spices and hints of hazelnuts. Medium-bodied, chewy and pretty. A medium finish. A cabernet for early drinking.
92 Vinous -
Bright red-ruby. Very pure, aromatic scents of blackberry and violet. Fine-grained on entry, then dry, focused and classic in the middle palate, conveying subtle sweetness and a slightly medicinal coolness to its dark raspberry, mineral and fresh herb flavors. Finishes broad and clean, with very smooth tannins and lingering sweetness. Not a powerhouse but nicely delineated and complex.
91 Wine Enthusiast -
Earthy berry aromas are deep and solid enough to be convincing. A plump palate with drying tannins features quality spiced berry and plum flavors that should seem familiar to most Cabernet drinkers. This is fleshy in feel and spicy on the finish. Drink through 2025.
91 Wine Spectator -
Svelte and well-structured, with paprika and white pepper accents to the dark plum and cherry tart flavors. Pastry and Asian spice notes linger on the finish. Drink now through 2022. 5,700 cases made, 1,900 cases imported.

Well, as the saying goes, “Not my circus, not my monkeys.” Vina Cobos’ Bramare series focuses on single varietal wines from high elevation sites way up there in Mendoza. This 100% cabernet sauvignon from the Lujan de Cuyo region has all the classic cabernet notes, with the textures and polish that have become Hobb’s signature over his long, illustrious career. Expressive aromatic notes of lilacs, blackberries and cherries framed with dark chocolates, roasted thyme and toasted black pepper. The palate finds complementary notes of cassis and kirsch with myriad toasty oak sensations winding into a long and velvety finish.

Grapes are hand-harvested at sites ranging from 3,200 to 3,500 feet above sea level in an arid semi-desert climate on gravelly, nutrient-poor soils. The extreme site and resulting low-yields are concentrated in flavors, colors and tannins, settling and integrating into this expressive wine over 18 months in 30% new oak (20% French, 10% American) and 70% once-used barrels.

PAIRING IDEAS: Feast like a proper Argentinian gaucho with this Chimichurri Beef Casserole. One pot meals for the win!

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: A little wine to loosen up those hips, then light the dance floor aflame with the Gypsy Kings’ “Bamboleo”.
