Le Macchiole Messorio Toscana 2001 - First Bottle

Reviews

96 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
This was a cooler year on Coastal Tuscany and the 2001 Messorio shows the signs of a slower and more prolonged evolution. The summer months were slightly cooler than average with more evident diurnal shifts towards the end of the growing season that helped to amplify the wine’s dark fruit aromas and its beautiful sense of grace and balanced power. A deep freeze during spring months naturally reduced yields in the vineyards. The wine’s slow and steady bottle evolution has established profound depth and silky persistence. The bouquet is highly distinctive thanks to the mineral notes and a touch of delicate herb (that reminded me of green clover) that lifts so delicately from the wine’s darkened core. The tannins are smooth and beautifully polished.

About the Producer

Le Macchiole is a renowned winery located in the Bolgheri region of Tuscany, Italy, with a rich history steeped in winemaking excellence. Founded in 1983 by Eugenio Campolmi, Le Macchiole initially began as a small, family-run estate focused on producing high-quality wines from international grape varieties. Over the years, Le Macchiole gained recognition for its innovative approach to winemaking, particularly in crafting exceptional Bordeaux-style blends and single-varietal wines, such as the iconic "Paleo" made from Cabernet Franc. The winery's commitment to expressing the unique terroir of Bolgheri, combined with a dedication to sustainable viticulture practices, has solidified Le Macchiole's standing as a trailblazer in the Italian wine scene. Today, the estate continues to produce wines that reflect both tradition and modernity, earning accolades from critics and enthusiasts alike for their elegance, depth, and distinctive character.
