Tyrus Evan Syrah Seven Hills Vineyard Walla Walla 2017
Ken Wright! You know him from his legendary pinot noirs from Oregon, of course, but did you know he makes Syrah under this label (named after his sons)? And not any Syrah, no, this hails from the “Grand Cru”-level Seven Hills Vineyard in Walla Walla, just on the Oregon side. This Syrah is a blockbuster, serious wine in a daily, unassuming package, and at our price, we consider it a major no-brainer with huge bang-for-buck!
Fun fact: Walla Walla is the only American Viticultural Area to reside in two different states: Oregon and Washington! About 250 miles east of Portland, it straddles southeast Washington State and northeast Oregon, surrounded by the Blue Mountains to the southeast, the Palouse to the north, and the Columbia River to the west. This is ground zero for incredible Rhone varieties, and Syrah in particular thrives here.
This beauty is steeped in blooming lavender with dusty black cherry and black plum reduction and blood orange zest. It takes us straight to the lavender fields of Chateaunuef-du-Pape with its Provencal herb flavors, more blood orange laced acidity, ripe cherry and sweet earth nuances. It is incredibly rare to find a wine with this level of complexity and verve in the sub $20 range, especially with this kind of pedigree.

PAIRING IDEAS: We had a half-chicken smothered in Oaxacan spices last night and what a perfect matchup. Broil it, grill it, keep it simple and let this lush, mouthcoating Syrah work it’s magic!
MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: Put “Drivin” on 9” by The Breeders on repeat. Eventually you’ll get to “Cannonball” and “Huffer”, and life will all make sense.
