Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto Tuscany 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

95 James Suckling -
This is extremely perfumed with aromas of lavender, cinnamon, blackberries, bark and blackcurrants. Full-bodied, extremely refined and polished. Gorgeous fruit and balance. Best ever bottling of this pretty wine from the producers of Sassicaia? Drink or hold.
94+ Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
This wine is showing exceptionally well in this classic vintage. The 2016 Guidalberto (Cabernet Sauvignon and a smaller percentage of Merlot) opens to a full and generous bouquet and a beautifully rich and velvety appearance. This edition of Tenuta San Guido's mid-level wine offers a bigger aromatic profile, more texture and more volume as well. Dark cherry and blackberry segue to spice, tar, leather and sweet fruit at the end. The mouthfeel is elegantly shaped, silky and nuanced. This may well be the best vintage of Guidalberto I have yet to taste—and you can get this wine at a great price too.
93 Wine Enthusiast -
This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot opens with aromas of black currant, star anise and a whiff of incense. It's savory and elegant, doling out flavors of dried black cherry, raspberry jam, white pepper and licorice. Fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity provide balanced support. Enjoy through 2027.

“This may well be the best vintage of Guidalberto I have yet to taste—and you can get this wine at a great price too.” - WA on Guidalberto

“Best ever bottling of this pretty wine from the producers of Sassicaia?” - JS on Guidalberto

Given the enormous praise and scores for its older brother Sassicaia, we’d say emphatically YES. For our killer $45 price??! This is EASY, guys. Buy this (while we have it, will run out quick) and drink it with joy while your Wine of the Year rests in your cellar (we have a few left - see here). Oh, and did we mention that the 2016 Sassicaia scored 100 points from Wine Advocate AND Decanter?

2016 is the perfect vintage to make a blockbuster “second wine” like this -- it’s powerful, warm, generous, and balanced. This one has deeper texture, mouth-gripping flavors, and fine-grained structure than any before it. If you’re new to Guidalberto or an old hand, EVERYONE who loves these Bordeaux-inspired Super Tuscans should be rushing to grab what we have!

On that note: did we mention 95 points and $44.95?? $269.70 a 6-PACK DELIVERED! Wow. Mix and match as you like of course...the WS #1 Sassicaia ‘15 or anything else from our impressive Italian selections. First come, first served….!

About the Producer

The Tenuta San Guido is a 7,500-acre estate located in the province of Livorno on the western coastal outskirts of Tuscany near the village of Bolgheri. Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta acquired it through his marriage to Clarice della Gherardesca in 1940. The legacy of Sassicaia began in 1944, when Mario Incisa acquired a number of Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc vine cuttings and planted them on a sloping hillside of the San Guido estate, called Castiglioncello after the 11th-century castle at the vineyard's upper edge. This tiny, 3.75-acre vineyard stood alone until 1965, when a second Cabernet vineyard was planted with cuttings from the Castiglioncello parcel; the gravelly, 30-acre plot would give the wine its name: Sassicaia, "the place of many stones". With the radical changes in the D.O.C. system of regulations as of the 1994 vintage, Sassicaia's extraordinary reputation was acknowledged through the Italian government's granting the wine its own appellation, the only of its kind.
