Chateau Fonplegade Saint Emilion Grand Cru 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

96+ Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2016 Fonplegade opens with a very savory nose of smoked meats, tapenade, sauteed herbs and beef drippings over a core of plum preserves, chocolate-covered cherries and cedar chest plus wafts of violets and cigars. Medium to full-bodied, the palate possesses both intensity and elegance, with the black fruit layers superbly framed by firm, fine-grained tannins and wonderful freshness, finishing long and mineral laced.
95 James Suckling -
A very suave, modern-style St.-Emilion with fine blackberry aromas and some bitter chocolate. Excellent balance of fruit, generous velvety tannins and lively acidity on the rich palate. Long, clean and supple finish. Drink or hold.
95 Jeff Leve, Wine Cellar Insider -
Deep ruby-purple in color with a spicy set of aromatics, this is made even more complicated by dark cherries and plums. This wine is rich, sultry and silky, competing with, and perhaps exceeding, the very strong 2015. This is going to be a fun back-to-back vintage to compare over the next few decades. The wine was made from a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc and reached 14.2% alcohol with a pH of 3.45.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!
Best price in the continental USA! Michel Rolland and Stephane Derenoncourt consult on this rockstar, tiny production project that delivers incredible complexity, purity and freshness for a humble price tag!

We taste A LOT of Bordeaux each year and our trip to Bordeaux this spring was packed full of superb wines, with a focus on the beautiful 2016s. In a lineup of almost 100 samples spanning the entire region, this wine was a contender for the top spot. When we inquired about pricing, our jaws hit the proverbial floor and we went to work! Now it’s here and ready to ship...but don’t expect it to last long!

Denise and Stephan Adams purchased Chateau Fonplegade in 2004 from the Moueix family. No expense has been spared from the outset, hiring the top names in consulting viticulture and winemaking, Michel Rolland and Stephane Derenoncourt. They completely overhauled the cellar in addition to replanting several blocks and converting to organic and biodynamics. Denise and Stephan have also made waves here in Napa, purchasing a gorgeous property on Howell Mountain, and creating one of the most exciting new "cult" wineries in recent memory.

The already legendary 2016 vintage is on full display in this magical bottle from the treasured limestone plateau of Saint-Emilion! A site that has been cherished since the 1500s and before that, by the Romans. In fact, Fonglegade is home to some of the best preserved Roman ruins in all of Bordeaux! Check out the rave reviews below!

About the Producer

Grapevines have thrived at this exceptional site, perched on the limestone plateau that is home to Saint-Emilion's finest vineyards, since the late 1500s. In 1852, legendary wine merchant Jean-Pierre Beylot purchased the estate and built the elegant château that still stands on the property.  Enchanted by the terroir, history and grandeur of the estate, with its ancient Roman pathways and graceful vine rows, Denise and Stephen Adams acquired Château Fonplégade in 2004 and spent 15 years tirelessly revitalizing the vineyards, renovating the cellar and lovingly restoring the château.
