Penfolds hardly needs an introduction. This is one of the world’s most recognizable winery brands, and they’ve almost single-handedly cartographed Australia onto the world’s wine map. With a company motto that rings out “1844 to Evermore”, Penfolds has been set on global domination for some time. An illustrious parade of long-standing and revered winemakers, plus incredible access to all of the best vineyards and regions of Australia’s wine regions, have only accelerated their goals.
Bin 138 is the winery’s homage to the Southern Rhone, and this 2021 vintage marks a return to tradition – where grenache is the principal grape, and then blended with syrah and mataro (aka, mourvedre.) This stands as the 30th anniversary vintage of this cuvee – originally called “Old Vine Barossa Valley” until it was elevated to Penfold’s upper echelon with “Bin Status” in 1998.
The fantastic 2021 Barossa Valley harvest has made this perhaps the finest Bin 138 yet! A spicy, floral perfume reminiscent of a Tangier spice market gets things rolling, then joined by deeply heady notes of balsamic and Damascus plums. From there, expect elements of new leather, mocha powder, Luxardo cherries, fire-roasted meats, candied violets, and charred earth. It’s intense, but pretty, with an almost Northern Rhone-esque meatiness and savory edge. Gorgeous now, but with years to spare – this is unequivocally one of the best quality for value Rhone Blends you can find on the market today – from any region! We did our part and snagged all we could...now, it’s your turn!
