Cape Point Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc Semillon Isliedh 2020 - First Bottle

Reviews

96 Tim Atkin -
Made in a vintage that "taught us the virtues of patience," according to Riandri Visser, this is also a wine that will reward cellaring. Combining barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Semillon, it comes from wind-buffeted blocks at the top of the farm and is suitably Atlantic in style, with chiseled acidity, kelp, citrus, and pink grapefruit flavors and fine oak.
94 Vinous -
The 2020 Isliedh, the Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon blend, has a very delineated and complex bouquet of citrus peel, peach skin, white chocolate and grilled almond, plus brioche scents emerging with time. The palate is well balanced, fresh and very focused, with a fine bead of acidity and a hint of black currant lending complexity on the finish. An outstanding Isliedh from Cape Point.
92 James Suckling -
A cloudy white with aromas of fennel, green pepper, grapefruit pith, green apple and white pepper. Some green coffee beans, too. Medium-bodied with bright acidity and a textured, phenolic palate. Some smoked-almond and subtle cedar notes come through. Sauvignon blanc and semillon. Semillon in amphora. Delicious now.

“The finest white Bordeaux blend in the country” – Tim Atkin MW

Yep… that just about sums it up. The Sadie family are legends of South Africa’s wine scene… they're produced some of the finest white wines anywhere in the world. Here in the U.S., they’re probably more well known for their old vine chenin blanc wines – ones that will go toe-to-toe with the very best of the Loire – but this 96 POINT Bordeaux style blend is sure to surprise and delight even the most experienced of drinkers… and all at the best price in the country!

Winemaker Riandri Visser has earned the moniker “The Siren of Sauvignon” from South Africa’s prestigious Wine Mag publication. She’s a bit obsessed (in a good way) about the grape – with her dog, “Sauvignon,” and her two cats, “Loire” and “Sancerre,” offered up as further proof. She took on the head winemaking role back in 2016 when she was 25 years old and has crafted simply spectacular sauvignon blanc and semillon blends ever since. Check out an interview with her here.

This Isliedh cuvee clocks in at 80% sauvignon blanc, plus 20% semillon – with the sauvignon blanc barrel fermented and the semillon in clay amphorae. The textured, almost oily weight of the wine is the happy result – providing a creaminess to perfectly balance the focused salinity and acidity provided by the coastal mountain site on South Africa’s western cape. The wine showcases a nice interplay of stone and citrus fruits with remarkable and deeply nuanced complements of white chocolate, raw hazelnuts, star anise, and well-integrated oak spices revealing themselves over time. Truly as complex and thought-provoking as any white wine you’ve ever tasted, and one not to be missed!

Food Pairing: Tinned fish is having a renaissance at the moment – with quality producers being lovingly adopted by world-renowned chefs and products popping up simply adored on top restaurant menus the world over. Read this for some inspiration and serve your creations alongside this marvelous white!

Music Suggestion: Apart from their remarkably sad history, The Pretenders story is one of the most fascinating in the history of music. Check it out for yourself, but play a little “Back On The Chain Gang” first.
