Grillo is a rare grape variety not often found in the U.S. A cross of two local varieties, cataratto and zibibbo, grillo was once used exclusively for Marsala wine production. Plantings of the grape were in constant decline for 30 years until the legendary Marsala producer Marco de Bartoli decided to vinify grillo on its own as a dry, white wine. From there, as the potential of the grape became more widely recognized, the plantings increased – spreading from the vineyards of Marsala east to the Val di Noto, just south of Syracuse. Grillo is now known for its minerality and ageability, with a weight and texture surpassing pinot grigio, a floral nature reminiscent of viognier, and a structure and acidity to rival White Burgundy’s best plots of chardonnay.
"Family and Friends" is produced from the best lots of grillo, subjected to 6 months of aging, mostly in concrete eggs with a small portion in oak. The wine has abundant aromas of citrus, lavender honey, orange blossom, candied ginger, lemongrass, and sea spray that just pulls you into the glass. The palate is creamy, rich, and laden with minerality, and flavors that echo the aromas harmoniously. The acidity is remarkably vibrant and fresh for such palpable plushness.
The vineyards overlook the Ionian sea and the natural oasis of Vendicari, with Mount Etna visible to the north. These organically farmed, head trained vines thrive in the region's limestone-rich soils – the excessive heat moderated by the cooling influence of ocean-driven winds. The wine was originally made in crazy minuscule quantities… just for family and friends. Over the years, the success of this singular expression of the grillo grape became so fiercely revered by said friends and family that Antonio decided to add it to the portfolio. This is a white wine that shows a harmonious balance of power and elegance, ideally suited for cellaring up to a decade, but approachable with a brief decant in its youth. If the white wines of Sicily are new ground for you, this is among the best examples to showcase the quality of the region’s obscure grape varietals. We have this in very limited quantities, so grab some while you can!
PAIRING IDEAS: The best chefs know the meaning of the “K.I.S.S.” philosophy. Keep it simple, stupid! And so we shall with this classic Insalata di Polpo e Patate.
MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: Channeling their inner Van Morrison, The Swell Season hits all the jazzy, smooth alt-rock notes with “Low Rising”.
About The Producer
A seriously concentrated and very silky Sicilian dry white that is unashamedly inspired by Grand Cru white Burgundy. Wonderful bouquet of citrus blossoms with just a hint of vanilla. Mouth-filling yet graceful on the palate, the long and complex mineral finish beautifully supported by just a touch of oak tannin. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
The name for this Grillo comes from the fact that originally, this wine was made purely for the family (and their friends!). Located near Notto, just 1km from the sea in southeast Sicily, the grapes for this white are fermented partly in concrete eggs and partly in small barrels, aged in the same vessels for at least six months then bottled six months prior to release. Peachy and saline on the nose, in the mouth it is floral and juicy with structured yellow plum and a fresh finish. Approximately 10,000 bottles made.
The 2020 Friends and Family is a varietal Grillo with a sweetly inviting bouquet of candied lime, fresh mint and wet stone. This is silky-smooth, weighty even, yet very nicely balanced by lifting acidity, with ripe orchard fruits complemented by an almondy richness. For all of its extroverted character, the 2020 finishes fresh with pretty inner florals that linger. Feudo Maccari did a wonderful job of communicating total elegance here. Drink 2022-2025.
