Warwick Estate Reserve Proprietary Red Stellenbosch 2018 - First Bottle

97 Decanter World Wine Awards -
A complex nose of spiced black fruits, soy, roasted meats, and toasty oak. A rich melange of blackberry confit, stewed winter plums, and seductive saline cassis nuances on the palate. A creamy, classical wine of note.
94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
Made from a blend of 55% Cabernet Franc, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Merlot, the 2018 Warwick Estate Reserve (Trilogy) is firm and rustic yet juicy and offers a bold nose. The wine slowly unwinds out of the glass, offering layered oak essences atop notes of blackberry jus, caramel, sage, cherries jubilee and dusty plum blossoms. Full-bodied, the palate is precise, focused and still tannic and will need an additional year or two in the bottle to find its stride. Flavors of bitter black tea, roasted red peppers and cherries with cedar and cigar box sway across the mid-palate before ending with an evolving and elongated finish. It’s absolutely brilliant; just give it another year in bottle and then drink through the middle of the next decade. Bravo!

Long-heralded as a top producer in Stellenbosch, Warwick’s flagship Cabernet-based Proprietary Red is an incredible wine–that just happens to be an incredible value. Oh man, just wait until you see this price…clocking in at 55% cabernet franc, 42% cabernet sauvignon, and 3% merlot, this wine packs in an absolute wallop of deep, intense flavors. Crushed blackberries, herb-crusted roast lamb, black tea, and spiced plum tarts offer up heady and intoxicating sensations which draw you in for a deep dive into the full-bodied and complex mouthfeel. The finish goes on and on and on.

To craft this wine, each component is harvested, de-stemmed, and hand-sorted to vinify separately. Fermentation and maceration can last for up to 40 days, with 3 to 4 pump overs each day, before racking to barrels for 24 months of aging (55% new French oak). All in the name of depth and concentration, this wine is something to savor! With wonderful polish and complexity, this can stand toe to toe with the great wines of Bordeaux. At the price we got going today, expect it to fly quickly!

** Called "Trilogy" in South Africa, and elsewhere, the name of the wine here in the U.S. is changed to "Reserve" avoid infringement with a certain Napa wine. **
