Domaine Marc Colin Saint-Aubin 1er Cru En Montceau 2018
Chardonnay | France
$59.95 $75.00 - 750mL
Normally $75! Talk about overdelivering! Man! Marc Colin’s newest releases are truly irresistible across the board, and we have been consuming them with great joy. You NEED to get on the train, and the 1er Cru Saint Aubin we have today is PERFECT at our price – especially on 6 - $54.95!
"This excellent effort seems to be constructed from liquid rock and is really quite impressive. Note well though that in contrast to some of the prior wines, this is one that's going to need patience so buy accordingly. *Outstanding*" - Allen Meadows, Burghound
When you get an "outstanding" from Burghound, you know you are doing something right! This will appeal to fans of the slightly richer style of white Burg – done with perfect polish and balancing its touch of toastiness with pure, laser-fresh citrus fruit and intense minerality. It's impossible to put down, really. This, no doubt, does benefit from air (or some cellar aging if you have the patience) and is much better on day two, shedding some of its toastiness for more mineral verve and even more length.
Sustainable and organic, grown on clay/limestone soil with vines 40+ years in age, this Saint-Aubin soars with chardonnay complexity – tiers of blood orange, lemon zest, liquified rock, almonds, orange flower, lightly toasted bread and a terrifically drinkable (we’ve said how much we love to drink these wines, right?) structure with a touch of weight that is cut by a knife of acidity and minerality. Just read the reviews below – you’ll see what we mean – plus, at this PRICE?
PAIRING IDEAS: Got an air fryer? Get a good piece of halibut, dip in egg, roll in panko. Make a mayo with capers, arugula, lemon and S+P. Toast a bun. Fry that protein and pop it on the bun with the mayo. MMM!
MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: This is a good Kurt Vile wine, easy, trippy, rollicking and sweet/sad. Pick any Kurt Vile, like “Walkin on a Pretty Day”, or check out his collab with John Prine, "How Lucky", sooooo good! How lucky indeed to drink white Burgundy like this for under $60!

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2018 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru En Montceau is also performing well from bottle, mingling aromas of pear, pomelo, orange oil, fresh bread and ginger. Medium to full-bodied, racy and tensile, with fine depth at the core but a more open, giving profile than the 2017 vintage, this will offer a broad drinking window.
Burghound
Like the Charmois, the nose is presently dominated by residual sulfur though the underlying fruit does seem fresh and ripe. Otherwise there is almost painful intensity to the solidly dense and serious middle weight flavors that ooze minerality on the youthfully austere and beautifully chiseled finish. This excellent effort seems to be constructed from liquid rock and is really quite impressive. Note well though that in contrast to some of the prior wines, this is one that's going to need patience so buy accordingly. *Outstanding*
Vinous
The 2018 Saint-Aubin en Montceau 1er Cru has a more northerly exposure with less limestone but more marn soils, which tend to ripen later than the other cuvées. This feels much more primal and lacks the harmony of Colin’s other cuvées; perhaps it is going through an awkward stage in its barrel maturation. The palate is a little reduced at the moment but demonstrates fine weight and a slightly waxy texture, almost as if there was a splash of Aligoté on the finish. Not bad at all, but it’s difficult to see how it will develop once in bottle.
