Domaine Vacheron Sancerre Les Romains 2019 - First Bottle

Reviews

94 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
From 20- to 50-year-old vines in a south/southwest-facing vineyard, the 2019 Sancerre Les Romains offers a pure yet intense and iodine-scented bouquet of shells and oysters along with algae aromas. Full-bodied, rich and powerful on the palate, this is an elegant, refined, balanced and refreshingly mineral Les Romains with a long, juicy, pretty aromatic, seriously structured and persistent salty finish with stimulating grip. Impressive, as always. Tasted in February 2021.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!

We popped a bottle a few days ago, with some excellent fried chicken, and...WHOA. Vacheron is an old fave, as it is for most anyone who appreciates great Sancerre, but the ‘19 is just next-level. So beautifully complex with crushed shells, minerality and flinty citrus...the balance too! Wow! Anyway, we have just a small batch...please grab it TODAY! Happy Labor Day, indeed!!

Organic and biodynamic since 2000, the Vacherons are without question Sancerre’s top winemaking family. From the family’s pioneering work in identifying the region’s top terroirs, to their leading position in biodynamic viticulture today. The Vacheron brothers are the real deal.

The Vacheron's Les Romains parcel is a jewel with one of the highest concentrations of silex (filnt) in the entire appellation. This was also one of the domaine’s first single-vineyard bottlings (the first vintage was 1997). The flint soils which are rich in fossilized material are believed to contribute a mineral-inspired “smokiness” to the wine, but we also find wines grown in silex to have a mineral salinity and crushed oyster shell quality as well. Jean-Dominique once joked with me that his Silex is thicker than Dagueneau’s, where in some parts of the vineyard, the silex is more than six feet deep!

PAIRING IDEAS: A perfectly seared trout filet is what we are looking for. A simple creamy citrus sauce, with some sprinkled chives, parsley, possibly a few toasted almond slices? Sancerre shines with dishes like this.

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: Tim Armstrong is the co-frontman of the Bay Area legends, Rancid. He does a zillion side projects that we love. Check out “A Poet’s Life”.

About the Producer

Great-grandfather Maurice Vacheron tended a few vines back when Sancerre was but a stop on a village road. His son, Jean, was the first of the family to specialize in producing wine, paying particular attention to the influence of terroir on Sauvignon Blanc. Jean's sons, Denis and Jean-Louis, solidified the Vacheron name in Sancerre, showcasing the family's talent with Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Today, Denis' son, Jean-Laurent, and Jean-Louis' son, Jean-Dominique, have taken the estate to a whole new level of quality, championing biodynamic viticulture and selecting singular vineyard parcels that the family has observed for generations (and planted with their own hands) to bottle as single-vineyard wines, to showcase the heights that Sancerre can reach. 'Les Romains' was one of the domaines first single vineyard bottlings. The vineyard is made up of pure flint soils, rich in fossilized material that contributes minerality and smokiness to the wine.
