Domaine Vacheron Sancerre Guigne-Chevres 2018 - First Bottle

Reviews

94+ Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
From vines averaging 41 years old, planted on silex soils and picked almost as early as in 2011 (September 5 instead of 1), the 2018 Sancerre Guigne-Chèvres opens with a dense and concentred bouquet of dried white fruits, crushed stones and flowers. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, rich and intense yet crystalline, pure, fresh and salty Sancerre with fine tannins and a long, intense and iodine-inflected finish. Powerful, tannic and complex, this is an impressive wine to be cellared for a decade or two. Tasted in February 2021.
94 Vinous -
The 2018 Sancerre Blanc Guigne-Chèvres is bright, steely and full of character. Lemon peel, white flowers, crushed rocks and white pepper give this taut, sculpted Sancerre so much character and nuance. The Guigne-Chèvres will appeal most to readers who enjoy nervy, racy whites.
93 Wine Enthusiast -
Planted on flint soil, this north-facing vineyard has produced a steely, tight wine. Yet it is ripe and fresh, with young, tangy fruits that are just beginning to soften. Drink this complex wine from 2021. Organic and biodynamic.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!

The Vacherons are, without question, Sancerre's leading winemaking clan. From the family's pioneering work in identifying and exploiting the region's top terroirs to their leading position in biodynamic viticulture today, there are few artisans in Sancerre as exacting or as respected. We are thrilled to have a few cases to offer today from the “Grand Cru” level Guigne-Chèvres for the connoisseurs on our list. Here are a few highlights: 41 year-old average vines, from windy, steep slopes of silex and red clay, organic and biodynamic, qualitatively, a peer to top tier 1er and Grand Cru Burgundies, and drinks so far above its price, we are speechless!

Glean more from the pro reviews, but know this -- you will be floored by the pulsating energy and incredible raciness and purity here. Breathtaking. Rich and intense, yet laser-focused, it sings with citrus pith, yellow grapefruit, green tea, lime and crushed, wet stones -- wonderfully long and persistent. Just a JOY. You can treat this like Burgundy, too -- decant it and drink it on special occasions -- it’s THAT good.

While it lasts...as noted, incredibly limited!

PAIRING IDEAS: Tart, fresh cheeses (goat, feta, etc.) are the classic pairing -- go local or go French, it’s hard to go wrong! Dress it up with and serve it with a salad, you’re good to go.

MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: LEON BRIDGES or LANA DEL REY! Either “River” or “Ride” - feeling the smooth and soulful tunes alongside this STELLAR Sancerre!

About the Producer

The Vacherons are without question Sancerre's leading winemaking clan. From the family's pioneering work in identifying and exploiting the region's top terroirs to their leading position in biodynamic viticulture today, there are few artisans in Sancerre as exacting or as respected. Great-grandfather Maurice Vacheron tended a few vines back when Sancerre was but a stop on a village road. His son, Jean, was the first of the family to specialize in producing wine, paying particular attention to the influence of terroir on Sauvignon Blanc. Jean's sons, Denis and Jean-Louis, solidified the Vacheron name in Sancerre, showcasing the family's talent with not only Sauvignon Blanc but also Pinot Noir. Today, Denis' son, Jean-Laurent, and Jean-Louis' son, Jean-Dominique, have taken the estate to a whole new level of quality, championing biodynamic viticulture and selecting singular vineyard parcels that the family has observed for generations (and planted with their own hands) to bottle as single-vineyard wines, with the goal of showcasing the heights that Sancerre can reach.
