Domaine Faury-Gros Pinot Noir Siebert Vineyard 2017
Simon Faury is a French-born winemaking savant - his resume includes Domaine de Chevalier, Château Pichon Longueville, Bodega Michel Rolland in Mendoza, Robert Mondavi, The Napa Valley Reserve and Harlan Estate, and most recently, Crown Point with Philippe Melka. This gorgeous, wildly complex pinot is the second release under his own label, Domaine Faury-Gros. This has the nuance of a great Burgundy with the concentration and power of California's best. It's good to be a Napa local, I guess!
Just 5 barrels of this single vineyard, single block wine were made for the world. Deeply concentrated with impeccable balance, there is savory herb, briary fruit and forest floor component that sets this apart from the 2016 version. It has a crazy-long, layered finish - this just begs for a roasted rosemary chicken or even herb roasted pork loin. It has more stuffing and tannin than many CA pinots and that is quite deliberate, according to Simon. He has done his best to make a wine that is both enjoyable upon release, and mind-blowing with ample cellaring. BRAVO!
We are proud to be one of the very few to offer this wine in the world. Sweet! While it lasts!
PAIRING IDEAS: Try this with rosemary roasted whole chicken or take a drive up to the Boonville Hotel for dinner. Whether it is a smoked duck, or the most delicate seared halibut you have ever tasted, it is the PERFECT place to drink Burgundy, out in the garden watching the sunset.
MUSIC SUGGESTIONS: We think you just set Pandora on the Van Morrison station -- the crazy-cool “variety” that comes up there is just mellow and engaging, thoughtful and melancholy!
About the Producer
Simon Faury’s early years were divided between Lyon, Champagne and the Alps. Growing up in France, especially the Rhône Valley, gave him access to some of the world’s greatest wines. Simon studied Agronomy and Viticulture in Turin, Italy before earning his Winemaking Masters in Bordeaux. After school he traveled extensively, working in some of the world’s most prestigious wine regions including Barbaresco, Barolo, Bordeaux (Domaine de Chevalier, Château Pichon Longueville) and Mendoza (Bodega Michael Rolland). His Napa Valley resume includes Robert Mondavi, The Napa Valley Reserve, Harlan Estate and Merryvale. This is Simon’s first vintage of his own wine, and an attempt to mimic the depth and concentration of the greatest terroirs of Burgundy.
