Beringer Johannisberg Riesling Special Select 1993 (half bottle 375mL) - First Bottle

Reviews

96 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
When I was in northern California the week before Thanksgiving, the rumors that were swirling about the impending sale of Beringer by its international corporate owner, Nestle, to an investment consortium proved true when the sale was announced. Let's hope the new owners maintain the status quo, as Beringer has had an exceptional run of highly successful wines since the mid-eighties. Considering the diversity of wines produced, I would be hard pressed to single out another winery that has enjoyed as much success as Beringer has over the last decade. With the exception of a chunky, overly-oaked Pinot Noir, it is impossible to find anything less than top-flight at Beringer, with many of the firm's wines undeniably special. Readers with a sweet tooth will get plenty of thrills from the 1993 Johannisberg Riesling, a Trockenbeerenauslese-styled wine. This huge, unctuous, thick, botrytised Riesling possesses 30% residual sugar and 8% alcohol. This nectar is oozing with smells and flavors of apricots, peaches, and honey. Beringer has once again proven that they are one of the qualitative leaders in California as they continue to turn out reference point wines - not only for California, but the world.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!
Get ready to be seriously impressed. For $40?? A Napa Valley old-school classic, these Nightingales are Sauternes look-alikes, and with this kind of age on them, they have taken on a rocking-great level of nutty complexity... We recommend blind tasting with your geeky wine friends on this, and see how many say $300 French!! We scored this parcel from a longtime client and winemaker here in Napa, and these are perfectly stored treasures in fantastic condition that are incredibly difficult to find with this kind of age on it. We tasted two bottles of each below and were absolutely blown away by the quality level and consistency here. Born from botrytised sauvignon blanc, this was revolutionary at the time and still is! Get a few of each of these and enjoy them over the next decade! While they last!

About the Producer

Beringer is known for establishing many 'firsts' as leaders in the wine industry. Beringer was of the first gravity fed facilities and among the first to operate using hand-dug caves and cellars. They were also the first to give public tours in 1934, starting a Napa Valley hospitality tradition, and are the first and only winery to have both a red and a white wine named #1 Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator Magazine.
