Hacienda Solano Ribera del Duero Pena Lobera 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

96 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The 2016 Finca Peña Lobera fermented in open-top used 500-liter oak barrels that were later closed; the wine matured in them and half of the wine was moved into concrete after malolactic and completed its élevage there. In 2018 they did the same élevage, as they didn't do this wine in 2017 because of the frost. This is my favorite wine from 2016, and I was able to see the vineyard, which is on sandy soils at almost 900 meters in altitude, a cooler place in the village of La Aguilera that produced a very perfumed wine, floral and exuberant, following the style of the 2014, which seems to be more the house style—fresh, elegant and with tension. The wine is very young but feels harmonious and relaxed. These cooler vintages seem to better reflect the house style. This is a great Ribera del Duero at a great price. 1,297 bottles and 75 magnums. It was bottled in June 2018.

Super rare and on the forefront of the movement in Spain focusing on terroir driven wines rather than oaky and over-extracted wines. This is all about finesse and elegance, born from a vineyard of pure sand. This is mineral and energetic with overt florals and red fruits galore. This is reminiscent of a great Chateauneuf born of sandy soils, maybe not Rayas level, but close and with the same ethereal, "je ne sais quoi" quanlity to it that keeps you coming back for more. It also has the ability to be in a constant state of flux; every time you go back for a sniff and sip, the wine has transformed in some way and there is more to discover. 96 points for Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and an incredible price considering how rare this wine truly is.

About the Producer

Hacienda Solano is a small family winery, located in La Aguilera, Burgos. A town that has some of the best and oldest vineyards in the DO Ribera del Duero. Toni Sarrión was invited to make his own wine in 2016 and has been directly involved in making the wines since then, along with Sophie Kunh and the rest of the Cubillo Solano family, respecting their philosophy and joining the project a year later.
