Mayacamas Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

99 Vinous -
The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is every bit as monumental as it was from barrel last year. Rich, deep and powerful, the 2016 is endowed with tremendous fruit concentration and all of the structure to back it up. Wild, savory and super-expressive from the very first taste, the 2016 is utterly magnificent. Wild cherry, grilled herbs, new leather, licorice and mocha infuse the 2016 with tremendous brooding power. The 2016 represents a striking, contemporary expression. All the Mayacamas signatures are there, but with just an extra kick of finesse that makes the 2016 a Cabernet of total allure.
96 Wine Spectator -
No. 4 Wine of 2020: This distinctive red throws a lot of wild sage, herb and sassafras notes out first, while the core of intense red currant, damson plum and bitter cherry fruit waits its turn. The vibrant structure is built on acidity, pulling everything together through the iron-streaked finish. Should age wonderfully. Best from 2022 through 2040. 1,600 cases made.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!
The new Mayacamas release is yet another indication that Andy Erickson and Phil Coturri are taking this estate to new heights. The 2016 is all that and some, with classic Mt. Veeder bay laurel and herbal laced cassis, this is really one of the best young Mayacamas vintages I've ever tasted. Only time will tell if this will prove as bulletproof and ageworthy as the legendary wines of the 1960s and 70s but one this is for sure, it is delicious now.

About the Producer

Grapes have grown continuously on the Mayacamas property since the late 19th century, at elevations of up to 2400 feet above the Valley floor. For almost 130 years, generations of vintners have worked the soils of the estate’s rugged mountaintop vineyards for tiny yields of intensely flavored mountain grapes. Now under new ownership with a superstar team of grower Phil Coturri and winemaker Andy Erickson, this historic property has ushered in a new era.
