Tarlant Cuvee Louis Brut Nature NV - First Bottle

Reviews

95 James Suckling -
Very nutty and flavorful Champagne with aromas and flavors of cooked apples, light strawberries and minerals. Full body. Checked fruit with a solid core of tannin and fruit at the end. Superb. Complex. Drink now.
94 Vinous -
The NV Brut Nature Cuvee Louis is another wine that is showing very well today. In fact, this is the best bottle I have ever tasted of the current release, a blend based on 2000 with reserve wines from 1999, 1998, 1997 and 1996. Vinification in oak brings out an extra dimension of breadth in the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Vinous and richly textured in the glass, the Cuvee Louis is positively stellar, with fewer of the oxidative notes that I have seen in other bottles. Apricot, chamomile, dried flowers and spice are woven together in this creamy, super-expressive Champagne. -- Antonio Galloni, July 2018

Built from a base of the 2000 vintage with 1999, 1998, 1997 and 1996 and disgorged in December of 2017 with 0g/l dosage, this is pretty outstanding. The extended time on the lees coupled with extreme concentration and vinosity delivers so much pleasure, you definitely forget that it is a Brut Nature as it does not come of austere or overtly racy in the slightest. Cuvee Louis is vinified and oak which adds wonderful texture, richness and depth to the wine. As Antonio Galloni put it, "the Cuvee Louis is positively stellar, with fewer of the oxidative notes that I have seen in other bottles. Apricot, chamomile, dried flowers and spice are woven together in this creamy, super-expressive Champagne."

About the Producer

In 1687, according to local records, Pierre Tarlant (1648-1744) began cultivating vineyards. He was the first winegrower, in Gland, in the Aisne district. It wasn't until after the devastation of WWI that the Champagne house was restored and Champagne Tarlant was truely born. The family now farms 34 acres in 4 different crus: Oeuilly, Boursault, St-Agnan and Celles-les-Conde. The wines are vinified and aged in oak and they do not go through malo. Expect wines that are round and creamy from the oak but zippy and fresh from the malic acid. No dosage also adds to the snappy acidity, don't miss these Champagnes!
