Big, bold, powerful, yet elegantly refined – that’s what you get in Monteverro’s 2018 flagship Super Tuscan, blended with 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Cabernet Franc, 15% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot. It expresses the magnificence of the picturesque Capalbio terroir, taking fruit from several plots spread around the property. Natural fermentation takes place in a combination of stainless steel and oak barrels, followed by aging 24 months in 80% new oak for softness and warmth.
The final wine is a certifiable beast who has just entered its prime drinking window – sure to stretch one, if not two decades into the future. Aromas and flavors of blackberry, blueberry, and black cherry draw you in with ease, as nuances of tingly garrigue, dark chocolate-covered coffee beans, black pepper, and a touch of cumin and chili powder weave their way through the mid-palate. A clayey-earth minerality brings you through the long-lasting finish, zipped up with mouthwatering acidity and dusty tannins.
This is for the Napa Cab and Bordeaux fans looking to branch out – and obviously, for Italian wine lovers, this is your Super Bowl. Monteverro is based close to the coast, just outside Capalbio in southern Tuscany. It’s made by two verifiable rockstars – Michel Rolland (too many to list) and Jean Hoefliger (Alpha Omega, The Debate, many more) – and has quickly risen to the top of the Super Tuscan rankings, while keeping its price relatively comfortable compared to many of its sky-high neighbors.
Trust us – this is sexy, opulent, highly complex, and epically layered – one of those wines that shows you something different every time you take a sip! ASTOUNDING at our price!
PAIRING IDEAS: Osso bucco. Slow-braised meat, wine, rich, umami sauce... meltingly tender. Maybe over risotto to really up the ante.
