We’re never gonna turn down Brunello from the pristine 2021 vintage, and this organic, small-production, 95-point gem (only $65!) might just set the new standard. “Classic Sangiovese complexity”… “Vivid sense of freshness”… “Dark and rich on the palate”… Free shipping on 3+ bottles. Kind of a no-brainer, y’all!
I’ll trust anyone who starts as a maker of fine “bufala mozzarella” – and that’s exactly how the Anania family began their food and beverage production journey (alongside farming and making other agricultural products in southern Italy’s Calabria). Giuseppe Anania purchased the La Torre property in 1976 in the commune of La Sesta, just south of Montalcino and in the highest altitude section of the Brunello appellation. Their first vintage was in the treasured 1982 growing season, setting the foundation for the greatness that was to come.
The property covers 36 hectares of land, with just over 5.5 planted to vines – almost entirely Sangiovese Grosso – facing south and southwest. Their position of 1,500 feet above sea level gives the wines an interwoven elegance, and everything is farmed organically with hand-harvesting and indigenous yeast fermentation. The pride of care oozing from this place seeps into the wines, which are just as wonderful as the setting they originate from.
Case in point: the 95-point 2021 Brunello di Montalcino. Wow, wow, wow. What a thrill this wine is – made even more exciting to know it will ONLY get better from here. At five years young, we’re still in its baby years, but even so – this is a majestic melting pot of crushed violets and lavender, dried Herbes de Provence, wild blueberries and strawberries, clove, and a twist of blood orange. Exotic and peppery and nuanced and surprisingly integrated – a marvel! It drinks like something $150 or more… so grab up as much as you can at this price.
FOOD PAIRINGS: In honor of the Anania family’s heritage of buffalo mozzarella-making, use some alongside some spicy capocollo on a thin-crust pizza baked in a searing oven (hot as yours can go)... oy vey, pure heaven.
