Jeb Dunnuck calls E. Guigal “one of the world’s greatest wine estates for over seven decades” – and we now have their 92-point 2020 Crozes-Hermitage Rouge (100% Syrah) for under $30.

Surrounding the prestigious, smaller Hermitage hill is the Crozes-Hermitage appellation in the Northern Rhône Valley. With its diverse soils – from granite to alluvial – and continental climate, it produces rich, fruit-forward, and more affordable red wines than its lofty neighbors of Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie. Wine Spectator calls this 2020 from the famed E. Guigal a “generous, alluring red,” which is all we could ever hope!

Etienne Guigal started working in vineyards at just 14 years old, and eventually founded his own domaine in 1946 in the ancient Côte-Rôtie village of Ampuis, which has, over time, grown into one of the most iconic estates in the world. His son, Marcel, took over in 1961 after Etienne was struck by temporary blindness, and today, Marcel’s son, Philippe, is the domaine’s winemaker. Throughout several ambitious acquisitions and expansions over the years, the winery has remained committed to its family origins, traditions, and passion-driven values.

This remarkable 100% Syrah certainly carries the air of those values in its very being. If you’ve ever eyed a $400 or $500 of E. Guigal but just couldn’t pull the trigger, here’s an entry point that is an absolute easy yes, with the very same care poured into its design. Ample, expansive notes of blackberry and raspberry erupt first, followed by hearty pepper-crusted bacon juxtaposed with lilacs, vanilla, dried sage, and mouth-tingling spice and saddle-smooth tannins. “It's a classic, balanced, incredibly satisfying Crozes Hermitage,” says Jeb Dunnuck, and we couldn’t agree more! Get your six bottles for the all-out best pricing in the country, and have a taste of this icon for yourself.

PAIRING IDEAS: Go to In-N-Out (for those who blessedly live close to one). Order an “onion wrapped flying Dutchman” (secret menu item that translates to: double patty, double cheese burger wrapped in large, grilled onion slices instead of a bun), and sip this wine with it... no need to thank me later.

About The Producer

The Guigal domain was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in the ancient village of Ampuis, home of the wines of the Cote-Rotie. Etienne Guigal arrived in this region in 1923 at the age of 14. He made wine for over 67 vintages and, at the beginning of his career, participated in the development of the Vidal-Fleury establishment. Despite his young age, Marcel Guigal took over from his father in 1961 when the latter was victim to a brutal illness rendering him blind. Marcel's hard work and perseverance enabled the Guigals to buy out Vidal-Fleury in 1984, although the establishment retains its own identity and commercial autonomy. In 2000, the Guigals purchased the Jean-Louis Grippat estate in Saint-Joseph and Hermitage, as well as the Domaine de Vallouit in Cote-Rotie, Hermitage, Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage. Produced from seven of the most exceptional plots of the domain, Chateau d?Ampuis is a classy wine with toasty aromas of black fruit. Its tannic structure and elegance contribute to its ageing potential.
