This is one of only a handful of organic-certified estates in the entire Pessac-Léognan appellation – a tiny, family-run property that has been making beautiful, traditional Bordeaux for over a century. It usually runs around $60, but right now it's yours for under $30! When quality this serious meets a price this friendly, we simply have to share!
Tucked into a wooded corner of Cadaujac just south of Bordeaux, Château Bardins is a charming 9.5-hectare estate that has belonged to the Bernardy de Sigoyer family since 1903 – though the history here goes far, far deeper. The estate's old Eau Blanche watermill dates all the way back to 1350, and for centuries the property was owned by the monks of Sainte-Croix before the family took the reins. Today, fifth-generation Stella Puel devotes herself to the vines and the winemaking with real passion, and her warmth and love of the land are felt in every sip of these wines.
Stella converted the estate entirely to organic viticulture back in 2009, earning certification with the 2019 vintage, which places her in a tiny minority. Of Pessac-Léognan's roughly 1,800 hectares and 70-odd châteaux, only a small handful are organic-certified. Everything is hand-harvested, fermentations happen spontaneously, and there's no formula – Stella does it all by feel. There are even little bat houses built right into the cellar walls, and biodiversity is no marketing buzzword here. The vineyard sits on a gravelly rise that drains naturally toward the Eau Blanche stream, giving the wines their lovely freshness and drive.
The 2018 is a Merlot-led blend rounded out with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, and it's a real charmer. In the glass it's both supple and tense – a velvety Merlot texture pulled snugly over a chiseled, chalky structure, with tannins that are firm but never mean, promising even better things with a little age. You’ll note a generous core of blackberry, dark cherry, and ripe red plum woven through with earthy graphite and anise, plus lifting hints of sweet tobacco, cedar, and a dusting of pepper and spice. It's dark-fruited, savory, and gloriously unfussy – an enchanting wine you can drink next week or tuck away through 2035. Either way it's a wickedly good pour, especially for under $30. This rare organic Bordeaux is about as good as value gets, y'all!
FOOD PAIRINGS: This one loves hearty, rustic fare. I'm reaching for a slow-braised lamb shoulder for something rich and savory to meet those earthy, spiced notes head-on.
