Maison Leroy Pommard 2009
Heads up! We’re talking just over TWO cases available here. And when you’re talking Leroy Pommard, from the exceptional 5 stars 2009 vintage – that will NOT be enough!
Madame Lalou Bize-Leroy is Burgundian royalty who needs no introduction. Maison Leroy is the epitome of Burgundy’s negociant game, which also happens to craft spectacular wines from their own estate (under Domaine Leroy). Oh yeah, to top it off, Madame Bize-Leroy is the matriarch of the family that just happens to own 50% of D.R.C.! For all wines under the Leroy portfolio, she rigorously sets the standard on aging and finishing all wines ever since she took over for her father, Henri, in 1971. There is no question that she has earned the moniker “The Queen of Burgundy”.
Her legendary palate and unyielding standards have made her and the wines she fashions the benchmark across nearly every village, commune, and cru in Burgundy. Pinot noir winemakers and wineries the world over taste their own products side-by-side with Leroy as a proverbial measuring stick...and only the very best come close. To have any of this wine, especially a cellared and ready beauty like these 2009s...we are simply dumbstruck! 2009 provided an embarrassment of natural riches – a perfectly calm spring led to a brilliant flowering, and the summer followed with no significant heat or mildew stress. Hail struck bits of Morey and Gevrey, but Pommard was spared entirely. Harvest was full, and the fruit was immediately showing its quality. The question was never “good or bad?” but rather “how good?” Now, over a decade into bottle, there is no question – these wines are tremendous, and top producers like Leroy produced some of the finest wines in their long history. Seriously, just a couple bottles over TWO CASES! Those who know Leroy will snatch these up in an instant!
