The Setting Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2020 - First Bottle

Reviews

97 Jeb Dunnuck -
The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley is a saturated red with a ruby hue and has a forward, floral perfume of juicy mixed black and red fruit, candied violets, plums, and fresh herbs. Full-bodied and gushing with primary fruit up front, it has fine tannins and a supple, rounded mouthfeel, offering loads of blackberries and flowers before revealing slightly more earthy tones of mossy earth and tea leaf. Drink 2025-2040.
96 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley was aged for 22 months in 75% new French oak. Deep ruby, it explodes with pure aromas of Morello cherries, blueberry, warm chocolate, cured meat and tobacco with youthful wafts of cardamom and vanilla. Full-bodied, plush and hedonistic, it has a velvety texture, generous yet classy oak spice, just enough freshness and a long, spicy finish. Latent, lush and squeaky clean at this stage, it's an age-worthy Cabernet, though I'd hedge my bets on the 2020s by drinking them on the earlier side. 741 cases were made.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!

The Setting has already skyrocketed to become one of the top wineries in Sonoma’s Alexander Valley, and expect these wines to only increase in price and popularity over the next several years. Jesse Katz is the wizard behind the curtain here, and this 97 point cabernet sauvignon is not to be missed!

The Setting is a relatively new project between three friends based in Sonoma County. One of those friends happens to be Jesse Katz – one of California’s (and beyond) truly up-and-coming winemakers. He’s built a global resume that would rival some of the best, with stints at Château Petrus, Château Haut Brion, Viña Cobos, Screaming Eagle, and more. He’s cracked the 100 point barrier more than once, and his precision and exacting standards have made him one of the fastest-rising rockstar winemakers we have ever seen.

This rare cabernet sauvignon – with a total production of only 650 cases – is sure to impress you as much or more as it did the myriad critics. The wine boasts a gorgeously perfumed bouquet of violets, lilacs, and lavender, followed by a wave of black cherries, blackberries, and blueberries – all luscious, and ripe, but never losing their elegance. Cooling and spicy notes of spearmint, tobacco, and green cardamom follow, then Tahitian vanilla, and this earthy, wispy Spanish moss element. Big, but very, very polished, with a velvety mouthfeel of super-fine tannins, and perfectly integrated acidity. Ready to go after a quick swirl in the glass, but nevertheless well suited to aging a decade or more. For under $70 – this will compete with Cali-cabs at twice the price or more...just a tremendous deal that is sure to fly in 2024.

PAIRING IDEAS: Black-eyed peas and collard greens. Both get cooked in a hearty broth made from smoked ham hocks and served alongside some spiced and roasted pork shoulder...it’s a great fit with this Alexander Valley cabernet sauvignon!
