Le Clos du Caillou Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge La Réserve 2022 - First Bottle

Reviews

97+ Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
A candidate for perfection, the 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape La Reserve is a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre from sandy parcels in Guigasse and Pignan. Alluring scents of crushed stone, floral elements and almost truffle-like complexities accent black cherries and plums on the nose, while the wine is full-bodied and expansive in the mouth yet manages to do that without seeming heavy or overly rich, and the silky finish is near-endless, reverberating with notes of dark fruit and licorice. Barrel Sample: 98-100

60% grenache and 40% mourvèdre from sandy plots in Guigasse and Pignan, which has won a striking 98-100 points from Wine Advocate, whose review says, “the wine is full-bodied and expansive in the mouth yet manages to do that without seeming heavy or overly rich.” A splendid conglomeration of red, blue, and black fruits harmonize with notes of smoked meats, rose buds, and black pepper for an altogether mind-blowing experience that ends with a supple and smooth finish that begs for another sip – or bottle – immediately.

About the Producer

The Clos du Caillou was founded in 1895 when Elie Dussaud settled there and created an old cellar. It started as a hunting preserve and this history ironically led to its exclusion from the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation upon its creation in the 1930's. IN 1996, Sylvie Vacheron and her husband, Jean-Denis Vacheron, decided to leave Sancerre terroirs for a huge challenge : take over the vineyard Le Clos du Caillou and produce great wines. Jean-Denis has very high ambition for the vineyard. He is determined to produce wines that suits him, free of any diktat. He like the finesse, the elegance, the Burgundy style.
