A blend of Cabernet grapes from vineyards including Artalade on Pritchard Hill, Denali, V Madrone and Sleeping Lady in Yountville. Sensational aromas lift from the glass, revealing lofty tobacco, vanilla and ripe black fruits. Layered and quite dense palate with expressive red and black fruit framed by fine-grained, silky tannins and supported by a core of fresh acidity that keeps everything light on its feet. Most impressive is how accessible the wine is in its youth, but it clearly bears the structure, fruit density, and natural acidity to cellar for a long while. A tour de force winemaker Jean Hoefliger.
This is a fresh red with notes of ripe plums and blueberries, baking spices and chocolate. Super polished and silky tannin structure with incredible balance and succulent fruit. Long finish with hints of crushed stones and spices. Very fine tannins at the end. Delicious now, but better from 2024.
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon AXR Napa Valley is the flagship release from this estate. It's another deeply hued Cabernet Sauvignon and offers a more dense, concentrated, mineral-laced style in its black and blue fruits, spicy oak, notes of graphite and lead pencil, full-bodied richness, and one heck of a great finish. It needs to be forgotten for a solid 4-5 years and will evolve for 20 years or more. 600 cases.
Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Flagship charges out of gate with vibrant crème de cassis and blueberry pie scents, followed by Black Forest cake, licorice, menthol and cinnamon toast wafts. Full-bodied, rich, concentrated and plush, the palate delivers a nice burst of freshness on the long finish.

The AXR estate was previously V Madrone until 2017, and originally the August Hirsch Winery in the 1880s. Purchased by three wine-savvy friends in 2017 (who sagely partnered with 100 point winemaker, Jean Hoefliger), AXR demonstrates an impeccable mastery of crafting terroir-centric wines that impressively represent Napa Valley. The name AXR represents the AxR rootstock – Aramond x Rupestris – which was prominent in California in the ‘60s before falling prey to phylloxera in the ‘80s-’90s. After its demise, California’s wine regions were left as a nearly blank canvas to experiment with and explore which grape varieties might thrive. AXR’s three founders and lead winemaker follow suit – viewing Napa’s land as a playground to traverse with curiosity, paying their respect to the area’s original “roots.” These four friends – Kelly Trevethan, Mark Schratz, Don Van Laeken, and winemaker Jean Hoefliger – sat around a table enjoying good food, wine, and laughter when the idea for AXR started to form life.
Their remarkable vision is evident in this brilliant, deeply purple hued cabernet – coming to life vividly with juice-packed, ripe, dark fruits, picking up purple plum, blackberry, black cherry, and crushed black raspberries along the way. Woodsy and mineral undertones of sharpening pencils, cedar wood, and spiced oak, with a touch of warm vanilla, add a balanced power that will blow away anyone who appreciates a full-bodied, classic, knock-your-socks-off Napa cab. When you order 2+ bottles, shipping is included, AND our price saves you 22% off suggested retail. This is a deal of every cab lover’s dream!
About the Producer
The AXR dream began with four friends sitting around a table sharing, dreaming, laughing, and occasionally sipping! The three founders: Kelly Trevethan, Mark Schratz and Don Van Laeken, as well as our consulting winemaker, Jean Hoefliger have created a clear vision that they are executing on. The history of the estate is compounded in layers; rooted in historic tales of fierce Native American hunting grounds, wild west pioneers and the first woman vintner of California in 1886. It has changed hands over the course of 134 years to become a brewery, restaurant, inn, winery and saloon. Tales of love, lust, heartbreak, murders and great fortune create an imaginative backdrop to our present-day vision of AXR.
