Château Petit-Village Pomerol 2019 - First Bottle

Reviews

96 James Suckling -
Plum, mushroom and bark aromas with some wet earth. It’s medium-to full- bodied with round, medium-chewy tannins that are polished and creamy in nature. Vivacious tannins. Very young and delectable at the same time.
93 Decanter -
Herbal and savoury nose, this smells of sage, rosemary, oregano, cherries and blackcurrants. Nice quality to the fruit, well defined and precise with such clarity. It stops a little short but this has a good impression on the palate combining density, power, freshness and a cooling element. Smooth and well balanced, just a touch of oak and tannins sticking out but the fruit is well presented and I like the cooling undercurrent. Youthful, serious and lots to like.
93 Jeb Dunnuck -
Based on 75% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2019 Château Petit-Village offers a spicy, already complex, medium to full-bodied style to go with notes of mulled red and black fruits, cedary herbs, loamy earth, and chocolate. More restrained and elegant now from bottle than barrel, it's still beautifully textured, has ripe, supple tannins, a great mid-palate, and one heck of a finish. It's another awesome Pomerol to drink any time over the coming 15-20 years.
93 Wine Advocate -
Attractive aromas of plums, currants and spices introduce the 2019 Petit Village, a medium to full-bodied, sumptuous and enveloping wine with a fleshy core of fruit, succulent acids and polished tannins. Gourmand and generous while remaining nicely balanced, this is a fine effort from an improving château.
91 Vinous -
The 2019 Petit-Village has finally found its mojo after a rather shaky time at bottling. Here, it has a focused, almost Medoc-like bouquet that suggest some expressive Cabernet Franc in the blend. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fine acidity, quite peppery in style with a classic, quintessential Pomerol finish. Lovely. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.
92 Vinous -
Now under the same ownership as neighbouring estate Beauregard, although this harvest took place under AXA Millésimes and winemaker Diana Berrouet-Garcia is staying on. This has plenty of luxurious Pomerol character, there are black fruits here, with some chocolate notes. Lacks a little tension that is perhaps a reflection of the summer heat, but this is a gourmet-edged, seductive wine. Tasted twice two weeks apart.

Château Petit-Village has made tremendous improvements over the past several years and now stands as a top estate in the Right Bank village of Pomerol, with additional evidence provided by this wickedly delicious, deep, and dark 96 point Bordeaux!

Château Petit-Village rests on a distinguished clay and gravel plateau, along the eastern edges of Pomerol. This Right Bank Bordeaux estate’s history is steeped in mystery; it’s unknown who first planted and manned the original vineyards, or exactly when they originated. After the French Revolution, the property passed hands from several prominent wine ownership groups before coming under the management of AXA Millésimes (who also own Château Pichon Baron) in 1989. They instigated a costly upgrade of all of the facilities and vineyards, before eventually selling to the Moulin family (Château Beauregard) in a monumental real-estate deal. The property and facilities are now immaculate – and cared for by a small and dedicated team… so the best of both worlds, actually. The 10.5 hectares are set at an altitude of 35-38 meters and planted to 75% merlot, 18% cabernet franc, and 7% cabernet sauvignon over red gravelly soil composed of quartz and flint, with a clay subsoil. These rich, unique soils – laden with iron oxide and mineral salts in the sub-soil – have set apart the estate’s wines as finessed, mineral-rich, and powerful with impeccably potent flavor profiles.

The 2019 vintage in Pomerol, as a whole, is considered brilliant, with opulent, rich wines showcasing impressive depth that will allow them to cellar for the next several decades. A mostly mild, perhaps even balmy winter – followed by a warm and consistent summer with cool evenings and two bouts of rain that helped rehydrate the vines, and a late September to October harvest – allowed the grapes plenty of time to mature, ripen, and develop a whole slew of complexities.

Although it’s primed to age another many years, this 96 point 2019 bottling is also drinking fabulously right now, with a creamy mouthfeel and beautifully textured, soft tannins. The blend includes 80% merlot, 15% cabernet franc, and 5% cabernet sauvignon that encapsulate notes of juicy plum, black currant, and blackberry with touches of cedar wood, dried Herbes de Provence, turned soil, and rich dark chocolate, plus a polished acidic undertone that just utterly captivates. PAIRING IDEAS:Braise some short ribs in a tomato and red wine sauce, and toss the tender meat with ribbons of pappardelle and some freshly grated parmesan, cracked black pepper, and a sprinkle of fresh parsley for an ultra-rich and satiating meal.
