2019 happened to be a brilliant year for Barbaresco wines. With dramatic climatic extremes – from a dry winter, to a cool and wet spring, to multiple summertime heat waves and a dry September with a couple of unprecedented storms – temperatures were up and down and all over the place, implementing just the right amount of stress to the grapes and bolstering their exceptional concentration, acidity, complexity, and ripeness of tannins.

Moccagatta is the name of the hill on which the winery’s vineyards are planted, extending through the Langhe at an elevation of 210 and 300 meters above sea level. With soils rich in fossil marls, clay, and limestone, the land that produces these wines generates a searing complexity that showcases a vivid sense of place and history in each bottle. The Minuto family have been proprietors of this land since the late 1800s, though only opted to turn their grapes into wine in 1913. Passing down from father to son since its inception, the winery is organically farmed and cared for in a way that reduces environmental damages, simultaneously allowing the terroir to speak through the vines in a caressingly authentic manner.

About the Producer

In the second half of 1800, Giovanni Minuto owned vineyards in the town of Barbaresco; in 1913 his son Luigi started to produce wine from the grapes harvested. In 1952, the company was split between the sons Lorenzo and Mario. Mario inherited the Moccagatta farmhouse which gives the name to the current company. Today, Francesco and Sergio carry on their father's business with great passion. They are supported by their respective sons: Stefano who works in the company, and Martina who got a diploma at the wine-making Institute in Alba and graduated in viticulture and enology at the University of Turin.
