Caterwaul Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2022
You may know of Thomas Rivers Brown as the man with an unprecedented 50-plus 100-POINT wines to his name (…no, that’s not a typo). And today we’ve got his new vintage of a mind-melting Napa Valley cabernet sauvignon...for under $60? Pure madness! Price drops to $54.95 per bottle when you purchase 6 or more – not even a case of the Mondays can bring us down today!
Just arrived, and only recently released by the winery, we have Caterwaul’s newest Napa Valley cabernet sauvignon! The glorious, but oh-so-limited 2022 vintage, from Napa’s top winemaker. Caterwaul is still a relatively new project from local vineyard manager Matt Hardin and the iconic Thomas Rivers Brown. The man with the Midas Touch is back, on his newest project set next door to his Rivers-Marie facility in Calistoga. Matt Hardin runs his own vineyard management empire, and a few years back, married the daughter of Stags Leap’s royalty Jim Regusci – giving Matt even greater access to some of Napa Valley’s top vineyards. Matt and TRB have worked together on a number of projects (like Outpost up on Howell Mountain), and decided to partner up and form their very own label with Caterwaul.
Dark, brooding, and powerful – this is crafted in the classic Thomas Rivers Brown style, where extreme concentration almost magically conveys a sense of elegance and softness. Aromas of plump cherries and warm baking spices turn to flavors of dusty, dried violets, raspberry compote, kirsch, black tea, dark chocolate, sweet-roasted pork tenderloin, and saddle leather – culminating in a smooth and lengthy finish. This wine delivers at the level you’ve come to expect from his prestigious clients like Schrader, Outpost, and more...at a price less than half of what you’d typically pay for even his cheapest wines. This is an inky, opulent wine with tremendous depth, yet it is remarkably approachable for all that – with a soft, polished finish over every edge, making this a wine to enjoy now, and equally so 10 years from now. Only about 12 cases to share, and trust us, you're gonna want to add some of these beauties to your stash before the secret’s out!
PAIRING IDEAS: It’s summer, so I’m firing up the grill for this one. Finely chop a handful of portabella mushrooms and mix with equal parts ground beef. Fold in an egg and a dollop of Dijon mustard to help it all stay together, then form patties, season, and grill like you would any typical burger. Delicious!
