Turley Wine Cellars Grenache Noir Pesenti Vineyard Willow Creek District Paso Robles 2022 - First Bottle

Reviews

91-93 Vinous -
The 2022 Grenache Pesenti Vineyard is exquisite. It emerges from a parcel of own-rooted, head-trained vines planted in 2004. Silky and aromatic, with tons of varietal character, the 2022 is pure class. This is such a sophisticated wine, and one of my favorites in this range.

Turley was born of a desire for preservation – of land and of people. Former ER doctor Larry Turley grew up on farms in the south, where his respect for the cultivation of land began. Though his career led him to study medicine and help people as an emergency room physician, he always had a desire to return to his roots. In the ‘80s, he partnered with his friend John Williams to form Frog’s Leap Winery. Later, after recognizing a yearning for something smaller and more intimate, he sold off his half of the winery and launched Turley Wine Cellars in 1993 – based in the original Frog’s Leap winery just north of St. Helena. From the beginning, the winery’s focus has been on working with and preserving old vine varietals – not unlike the resuscitation skills Larry honed in the ER room – using organic farming methods and carefully built grower relationships to craft more than 40 types of wine sourced from 50 different vineyards across California. Winemaker Mike Schieffer and Director of Winemaking Tegan Passalacqua continue to make some of the best expressions of California Rhone and old vine zinfandel anywhere, and these 2022 vintages will surprise and delight you to no end.

The grenache scored a wonderful 91-93 points from Vinous, who calls it “exquisite,” which we must agree with! Coming from a parcel of own-rooted, head-trained vines planted 20 years ago, this grenache is lovely, silky, and fragrant with notes of black fig, black currant, old leather, dried black tea leaves, and cassis. It’s big, bold, and beautifully sophisticated with loads of character and deep, dark fruits, with a fine measure of earthiness to level it out. We’ve got a mere 10 cases of this beauty that drinks high above its under-$45 price tag!

About the Producer

Larry Turley started Turley Wine Cellars in 1993. Because Larry has never met an old vine vineyard he didn't like, Turley now makes 47 separate wines from over 50 different vineyards, some with vines that date back to the late 1800s. By focusing on old vine vineyards in particular, Turley aims to both create and preserve California's unique winemaking culture. Turley Wine Cellars was founded in 1993 by Larry Turley and makes forty-seven wines, the vast majority of which are single vineyard designate Zinfandels and Petite Syrahs. Turley aims to be stewards of some of California's most distinctive vineyards, producing authentic wines that reflect their heritage.
