Rovellotti is a long-time personal favorite – another stellar gem of a find from the good folks at Rosenthal Wine Merchant. This Alto Piemonte legend takes nebbiolo to a whole new level… not Barolo, not Barbaresco, but uniquely Ghemme.

Six centuries of crafting some of the top wines in the region – and we scored their Riserva at the BEST PRICE anywhere! And… better still...it rocks! I personally fell for Rovellotti about a decade back – with the 2007 vintage of this wine. The historic producer, the incredible vineyards, the incredible expression of Ghemme...even the artistic and entrancing label. If Rovellotti isn’t on your radar yet – consider this the opportunity of the year – to grow your understanding of Piemonte to stunning new heights.

The Rovellotti family has crafted wines in Ghemme since the 15th century, with 25 hectares spread across the region of Baragiola. Nebbiolo takes the lead here at the Costa del Salmino vineyard, with some 10% of the local vespolina lending its signature. If Barolo and Barbaresco are all about the hills – Ghemme is all about the mountains. Tucked up in the northwestern edge of Piemonte, only about 30 miles from Switzerland’s famed Matterhorn peak, this single vineyard of Rovellotti’s oldest nebbiolo vines (and their best of the best vespolina) is as bright, powerful, and age-worthy of a nebbiolo as you’ll find anywhere – the result of an extreme confluence of massive daily temperature swings, a tremendously long growing season, and uniquely acidic soils.

Over 4 years of total aging, with nearly all of that occurring in large Slavonian and French barrels give this unruly beast a softened shell, with a harmonic balance that will only increase with time. Years, decades (and many of them) are all in the realm of possibility for this immensely complex wine – it is no exaggeration to state that this will age as well, and as long, as any still red wine from anywhere in the world. Taste cranberries and red currants, with a floral nose of roses, and violets, and even peach blossoms. Mineral notes of graphite, iron, and river rocks punctuate the palate, with spiced notes of white pepper, mace, and roasted green herbs. Simply wondrous – and with our price drop to just $39.95 each on orders of 4+ bottles (with shipping included) – you’d be wise to make a handful of these yours...stat!

PAIRING IDEAS: Osso Bucco – braised veal shanks – is a local signature dish that really makes this wine come to life. Better still, serve it atop a creamy Risotto Milanese, and allow the saffron-infused rice to really hammer home that glorious food coma.

About the Producer

The Rovellotti family has been producing exceptional wines in the small fortified town of Ghemme since at least the late 15th century. Their devotion to tradition is evident in their winemaking process, which takes place in a network of underground cellars filled with decades-old botti (large wooden barrels), located within Ghemme’s Ricetto, a 10th-century walled compound originally built for protection during times of war. Antenello Rovellotti proudly notes that of the fewer than 200 people who bear the family name worldwide, 66 live in and around Ghemme, a testament to their deep roots in the region. This dedication extends beyond the cellar, as Antenello has worked since the 1980s with the University of Milan to restore the natural balance of his lands and aims to eventually eliminate chemicals from their viticulture. The family's 15 hectares of vineyards are located in the Baraggiola subzone, Ghemme’s southernmost area, spread across four key parcels: Valle d’Enrico, Valplazza, Chioso dei Pomi, and Costa del Salmino. These sites, historically recognized for their prime conditions, are planted with Nebbiolo, Vespolina, and Erbaluce grapes. Their flagship Ghemme wines, including the Ghemme Riserva, reflect a deep connection to the land and showcase the unique qualities of the Alto Piemonte. The Rovellotti family’s wines continue to stand out as some of the finest in the region, offering a captivating expression of both tradition and terroir.
