Les Charmes is an incredibly famous Premier Cru parcel in Meursault – believed by many top Burgundy experts to rival any chardonnay Grand Cru in the land. These bottles often fetch several hundreds of dollars for top producers. Here’s where things get interesting: the vineyard sits on both sides of the boundary of Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet. This impeccable value falls on the latter side – and the resulting wine is far, far less pricey as a result! Even so, we have this for over 30% off the typical retail – making this an early contender for the top White Burgundy deal of 2024!

A stunning Puligny-Montrachet from a master of his craft, Alain Chavy’s Les Charmes makes use of some killer dirt to outperform many 1er Crus in the region...but again, at a remarkable price and value! Alain’s wines are structured and chiseled – and most certainly built to last. The domain farms an impressive 17 acres of vineyards here in Puligny-Montrachet, plus a couple of small holdings in neighboring Meursault and Chassagne. Since 2003, this estate has created wines that strike a near-perfect balance between fruit and oak, always allotting for the wines’ inherent minerality to shine through. That is just such the case here, with around 20% new oak, and minimal bâtonnage, to allow the richness and spice to be expressed.

Explosive aromas and flavors of green apples, toasted almonds, vanilla bean, and lemon meringue flesh out a taut and structured core, where vibrant acidity harnesses the subtle toastiness and ample orchard fruit character. This is a wine just starting to stretch its legs – and my guess is that its best days are to be found in the coming two to five years. A quick decant does wonders for the complexity now, however, so any way you slice it – simply a tremendous find in the ever harsher minefield that is well-valued White Burgundy! This is undoubtedly a lieu-dit worth seeking out, and you can’t beat our price anywhere in the USA!

PAIRING IDEAS: Something simple, fleshy, creamy, and flavorful should do the trick – I opted to pan-roast a thick portion of halibut, finished in butter and herbs, then served with a simple lemon-caper sauce. Delish!
