Domaine Aubert is a father-and-son operation run by Jean-Claude and Didier Aubert in Vouvray, originating as a humble family farm in 1823. For the past seven generations, the estate has become prolific in the Vouvray appellation and is cherished as a great producer of the locally thriving grape variety, chenin blanc, or “Pineau de la Loire.” Their Vouvray Sec 2022 is a benchmark dry chenin blanc with a splendid versatility, crispness, and clean palate that erupts with orchard fruits for a bountiful expression and grandiose finish that drinks well above the UNDER $20 price we have today!

More than 47 hectares of vineyards make up the grand estate of Domaine Aubert, all managed with sustainable agriculture practices to protect and preserve the terroirs here. The famous volcanic limestone soils sit atop elegant stones called tuffeau, providing the vines with excellent drainage and a distinct flavor profile and character within the wines. Loire chenin blanc is famous for its distinct high acidity, chalky minerality, and notes of flowers, honey, and straw – and this scrumptious bottle is a teachable expression of the highest order.

The Aubert estate is located in the communes of Vouvray and Rochecorbon, spread among the hillsides bordering Vallée Coquette. The earth here can be dug up to create ideal subterranean cellars for aging, and the Aubert family’s cellars sit beneath 12 meters of rock for that reason. The generational partnership of father Jean-Claude, and son Didier – creates a merger of two philosophies – respect for both tradition and modernity. Traditional wood vats are supplemented with temperature-regulated stainless steel, giving a classic wooly texture with a prized lemony and apple freshness.

This spectacular 2022 vintage is drinking uber-fresh right now, but with the deftest touch of residual sugar, it should also age exceptionally well. Chenin blanc is slow to oxidize and structured with plenty of acidity – allowing this grape to make some of the most long-lived white wines in the world. A gorgeous bounty of tangy apples, Anjou pears, and lemon cream come together for an orchard explosion on the tongue, coupled with a delicate undertone of honeyed almonds and poached pears with an edge of chalky, brisk minerality to tone down all the hits of bodacious fruit. The grapes are pneumatically pressed and settled over 24 hours, while fermentation is temperature-controlled using cold-water circulation. The wine ages through winter on lees before bottling in April the following year to produce a medium-bodied, tangy-fruited, ultra-lovely, and pure chenin blanc primed for all your warm-weather drinking occasions! For under $20 a bottle, this is a wine to load up on while you can.

PAIRING IDEAS: For a light yet flavorful meal, try a salmon, goat cheese, and arugula salad – sprinkled with lemon juice, olive oil, and salt and pepper. Sear the salmon skin-down until crispy and enjoy the rich, fattiness of the fish and goat cheese alongside this mega-fresh white wine.
