You’ve never tasted a sauvignon blanc like this, whose mouth-tingling crispness, sunny fruit characters, and wonderful brightness ignite a flame of desire that can’t be tamed! Coming from the northern Italian, ancient Roman city of Aquileia, this under $20 stunner is mind-meltingly delicious and outshines practically all its similarly priced competitors from California, New Zealand, Sancerre, and the likes. No soiree or simple back porch hang this summer should be complete without it, if you ask scoop some up while the takings are hot!

Aquileia is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the largest and wealthiest cities of the early Roman Empire, located near the borders of Austria and Slovenia alongside the northern reaches of the Adriatic Sea. Head winemaker Francesco Tarlao is following in his family’s footsteps – his grandfather Igino and father Sabino worked the fields to thoughtfully care for the estates’ 10 hectares of grapevines – though he’s bringing in his own fresh perspective. After studying oenology and working at some of the area’s most prestigious wineries – and others across Argentina and the U.S. – Francesco works to incorporate innovation and technological advances in order to enhance the overall art of winemaking. A man of many talents, Francesco moonlights as DJ REFOSKO! (Check out his pick to pair with this wine below.)

The portfolio of wines here is as vibrant as their creator’s beats on the turntable – with the whites catapulting to icon status, maintaining some of the most pure, vivacious, and outwardly pleasing essences across the board. After tasting many a variety from their line-up, I’d put this winery’s gems toe-to-toe with any aromatic and crisp white from any region across the world. The sauvignon blanc (which they simply call “sauvignon”) was grown on 10-year-old grapevines among silty loam with sandy and clay elements, vinifying for 18 hours in cryo maceration and fermenting at a controlled temperature before aging on 100% steel to retain all of that electric freshness.

The end result is something magical, buzzing with a sublime verve that can’t be matched! The nose leads floral, with a bouquet of jasmine, wisteria, and lemon blossom, plus whispers of candied peaches and Tuscan melon. On the tongue, flavors of bruleed grapefruits, golden apples, lemon meringue, and orange cream flitter across the warm and round textures of the wine, with a pepper spice on the finish. It drinks almost Chablis-esque – which is high praise indeed! We sincerely can’t get enough, seriously though, the staff won't stop buying this...and urge you to follow suit. A case for summer should do – at least, that’s our plan!

PAIRING IDEAS: Grilled fish is a must with this ultra-crisp, buoyant sauvignon blanc. Whole grilled branzino, with loads of fresh lemon and parsley...yes, indeed!

About the Producer

Set in the north of Italy and near the borders of Austria and Slovenia, the Tarlao winery is in the ancient Roman city of Aquileia – a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the largest and wealthiest cities of the early Roman Empire. Francesco Tarlao is the winemaker here at his family’s long-time estate – though perhaps you know him by his stage name…DJ REFOSKO! When he’s not spinning the turntables, or educating me on the proper way to sop up all that goodness left after eating a mountainous bowl of pasta (the process is called “scarpetta” or “little shoe”), he makes a portfolio of stunning whites (and reds) that are as pure, vibrant, and outwardly pleasing as any white wines, from anywhere else in the world! Sauvignon blanc (though they simply call it “sauvignon”), friulano, and pinot bianco – each grown on different soils and separate blocks of Tarlao’s seventeen acres of vineyards – all made to capture and express some seriously unbeatable freshness, verve, and lightning-in-the-bottle intensity! I’ll put these beauties toe-to-toe with any aromatic, crisp whites from any region – and for the money…these simply CRUSH similarly priced offerings from California, New Zealand, Sancerre, and beyond! The closest frame of reference (and my next blind tasting) is putting these up against Dan Petroski’s MASSICAN wines – stylistically similar, and mind-melting delicious…but at a price that you can only find here on Last Bottle! You can’t get these anywhere else in the country…but we don’t have NEARLY enough! Load up on two, three, six of these white wine packs – and brag all summer long! A bit on each below…but read with serious speed, friends!
