Duemani Duemani Cabernet Franc Costa Toscana 2019 - First Bottle

Reviews

98 James Suckling -
Fragrant nose of violets, dried flowers, plums, morello cherries, milk chocolate and toffee. It’s supple and juicy, with a medium body and creamy tannins. Lovely, plush plum fruit and a caressing, lengthy finish. Very structured at the end. Needs a couple of years at least. This is in form like a top long distance runner. From organically/biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink after 2025.
98 Falstaff -
Rich, deep dark ruby with a fine purple sheen. Very clear and memorable nose with resinous cedar, lots of dark berry fruit, wild raspberry, blackberry and elderberry; tobacco in the background. Shows a lot of fine-meshed tannin on the palate and juicy, dark berry fruit. Opens up in many layers, energetic and vivid, with a firm drive on the finish.
97 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
The Duemani 2019 Cabernet Franc Duemani ferments in oak and ages in barrique. This renders a very creamy and richly textured wine with substantial fruit weight, sweet spice and tobacco. There is a toasted note of espresso bean and scorched earth, but the wine is consistent with the variety and the rich nature of this vintage. It also shows elegant restraint despite its natural power. This is a full-bodied red (both organic and biodynamic) with very broad shoulders. It needs more bottle aging and eventually a double decanting before being poured.

Sitting perched above the Tuscan coastline is a boutique winery in the midst of severe land that had been left wild and rugged for many years, covered in clay soils, dense stones, and Mediterranean shrubs. Elena Celli and Luca D’Attoma planted Duemani in this precise spot, on the outskirts of the quaint town of Riparbella, after seeing the imperfections of the land as something that could – and would – eventually grow superb grapevines. It’s no wonder their 2019 vintage of cabernet franc has gathered 98 and 97 points from top reviewers – and it happens to be one of our all-time favorite Italian cab francs here at First Bottle. The feral terroir along with the couple’s delicate craftsmanship shine in this bottle of toasty, earthy, darkly fruited red wine for something majestically unparalleled!

With cooling ocean breezes plus spiking heat from direct sunlight hitting this mountain-top winery just right, the polarized climate adds to the environment’s conditions for growing gloriously complex, rich fruit. Sandwiched between forest and ocean, about 250 to 300 meters above the coastline on a rugged ridge, Duemani smells of both pine and salty sea air, with an ideal climate and terroir fundamental to elegant bouquets and slow maturation in the grapes grown here. Luca and Elena saw this location as the prime spot to grow their favorite varieties - syrah, merlot, and cabernet franc - purchasing the land in 2000 and farming the land using biodynamic and organic practices in order to maintain the lively, pure soil. Since its origin, it’s grown to 12 hectares of vineyard land and produces shy of 4,000 cases of wine annually.

Duemani – meaning “two hands” – is representative of Elena and Luca coming together and joining hands with a shared passion for excellent wines representative of the land they’re grown upon. Elena, born in the nearby town of Lucca, studied marketing in Florence before working in fashion for several years, while Luca came from Borgo San Lorenzo and has been a renowned winemaker and consultant for decades. He’s worked alongside top wineries throughout Italy, Spain, and Switzerland since the early ‘90s and is the wiz behind such popular hits as Le Macchiole and Tua Ria – two of our top Italian “others” – plus tons of other Italian showstoppers prior to launching his own celebrated label alongside Elena.

Their 100% cabernet franc is one I eagerly look forward to trying – and adding a few bottles to my own collection – every single year. The 2019 is fermented in conical, temp-controlled oak vats, followed by maceration on the skins for about 30 days with brief pumpovers and then aging in 80% new French oak for 22 months. The resulting wine is one that’s tantalizingly fragrant, deeply textured, and creamy, built with substantial structure and plush tannins that coat the mouth, without ever feeling too heavy. Layered notes of sour cherries, plums, dried violets, espresso powder, milk chocolate, toffee, and charred earth pull in a multitude of themes of varying mouthwatering degrees, from fruity to floral, saccharine to earthy, and spicy to smoky. This wine is an utter work of art and, as the 98-point James Suckling review states, “in form like a top long distance runner,” meaning it’s impressive as can be now, but is primed to go the long haul in your cellar, as well. Don’t wait – we don’t have nearly as many bottles as we’d like, and this is one you simply must try!

PAIRING IDEAS: Cab franc is such a wonderful food pairing wine – and for a bottle with as many complexities as this, I wanted something equally as multifaceted in my food choice. I went with a gyro-style lamb burger, mixing up some ground lamb, coriander, mint, salt, and pepper and grilling the patties for about 4-5 minutes per side over medium-high heat. Stuff those into some soft pita with grilled onion, tomatoes, lettuce, and some fresh tzatziki for something zippy and bright alongside this bold and deep Italian cabernet franc!
