Cervantes Family Vineyards Proprietary Red Blacktail Napa Valley 2021
They call this Napa Valley’s “last frontier” – and an extremely high-profile project from winemaker Andy Erickson (of Favia, Dalla Valle, Mayacamas, Arietta, Screaming Eagle, Harlan, and more), and Xavier Cervantes, who together have set out to raise exquisite Napa Valley hillside wines. Deep in Pope Valley, the sprawling ranch is akin to a wild and uncharted frontier, where you can spot native deer and bears on any given day. It’s here that the team grew and produced their 2021 vintage of Blacktail, Cervantes’ superior proprietary red blend made of 61% cabernet sauvignon, 21% malbec, 11% petite syrah, 4% cabernet franc, and 3% petit verdot. It’s an ethereally rich, layered, multi-faceted wine, overflowing with black fruits, baking spices, toasty oak sensations, and some tones of something savory – like dried meat and herbs – with powerful intensity, yet tannins velvety as a puppy’s ears.
Local winemakers claim that 2021 is one of the best vintages in recent memory, and it shows in this terrifically round, supple, deep blend. Their goal was to create “a wine that is rich and complex, just like this landscape” – and we must say, they blew that target out of the water. We have a scant selection of bottles remaining of this 97-point beauty – one that drinks gorgeously now and is primed to age flawlessly for another several years. Don’t miss this chance to experience some of the most illustrious winemaking the Valley has to offer!
