Harbison Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Pony Express Oakville Napa Valley 2018 - First Bottle

Reviews

97 Jeb Dunnuck -
Another single parcel release (these all come from the estate vineyard), the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Pony Express offers a huge perfume of blue fruits, candied orange, and violets, and while it has plenty of minerality, it has less overt iron and bloody notes than the The Trail release. Full-bodied, pure, and seamless, it's another singular wine from this team.
96+ Robert Parker's Wine Advocate -
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Pony Express opens with profound licorice, black cherry compote and tapenade scents over a core of blackcurrant cordial, blackberry pie and chocolate-covered cherries. Medium to full-bodied, tight-knit black fruit flavors are well-framed by a rock-solid backbone of grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing on a lingering fragrant earth note.
95 James Suckling -
Lots of ripe blackcurrants and blackberries with a leafy touch, some chocolate and pine wood. Full-bodied and dry, showing impressive concentration and a deep fruit core, together with an array of firm, racy and viscous tannins and a long, linear finish. Solid and fine-textured with structure. Needs a couple of years to soften. Try in 2023.

About the Producer

Harbison Winery, nestled in the heart of Oakville, Napa Valley, is a relatively recent yet notable addition to the region's illustrious wine scene. Founded by Joe and Pat Harbison, the winery embodies a passion for viticulture and a commitment to producing exceptional wines. The Harbison Estate vineyard was meticulously developed in 2005, designed with small blocks to facilitate micro-farming and allow its wines to express the estate’s varying soil types and selection of Cabernet Sauvignon clones. Rootstock 101-14 was chosen for its superiority in red, volcanic soils, and soon after, a special team hand-grafted 4,900 plants that now constitute the vineyard. Among the vineyard blocks are The Trail, located along the Silverado Trail near the front of the property and planted to clone 337, and Pony Express, the northernmost block named after a historical Pony Express stop on the estate, divided between Clone 7 and 337. Horseshoe, the western-facing block, was fondly nicknamed for the numerous horseshoes found during its development and is planted to clone 7. Although Harbison Winery does not boast a centuries-old lineage, it has quickly gained recognition for its meticulous approach to winemaking and the exquisite quality of its limited production wines. The dedication to sustainable practices and artisanal craftsmanship has positioned Harbison Winery as a rising star among Napa Valley's esteemed wineries, attracting both connoisseurs and casual enthusiasts alike.
