Gallica Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Ranch Napa Valley 2021 - First Bottle

Reviews

98 International Wine Report -
This 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon from Gallica is a true pinnacle of Oakville's finest wines. This beauty is loaded with blackberry, black olives, and hints of floral aromas on the nose. At first sight, the deep purple hue of this stunner grabs your attention. Gallica offers an expressive and complex palate with perfect layers of black currants, ripe berries, hints of black pepper, tobacco and floral notes. The velvety texture is perfectly balanced with an impressive and powerful structure, creating a never ending finish.

There are two Cabernet Sauvignons from Gallica, both of which are made by Rosemary Cakebread. Starting with the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon, it checks in as a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon and 16% Cabernet Franc. Blackcurrants, ripe tobacco, cedary herbs, violets, and hints of black olives all emerge on the nose, and this beauty is medium to full-bodied, with a pure, layered, elegant mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. It's a classic Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon that can be drunk any time over the coming 15-20 years. I love it even today.
97 Vinous -
The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Ranch is silky, polished and remarkably elegant. Crushed flowers, spice, lavender and a touch of mocha all grace this exquisite, nuanced Cabernet Sauvignon. All the elements are so well balanced. Silky tannins and perfumed floral notes wrap it all together. Today, the 2021 is a bit compact, perhaps because of the high amount of Franc in the blend, but it gains freshness with air.

We have not nearly enough of this immaculate Oakville cabernet sauvignon, from the masterful team behind Gallica, led by one of our all-time favorite Napa winemakers, Rosemary Cakebread. She earned a degree in viticulture and enology from UC Davis in 1979 and went on to hold stints at some impressive landing pads – including a harvest in Bordeaux and time working for Inglenook, Mumm, and Spottswoode before launching her own brand, Gallica, with a keen focus on her prized variety, cabernet sauvignon. Her singular goal was to create graceful, organically farmed, single-vineyard wines that showcase the story of the land on which they were grown.

This 2021 – boasting 98 and double-97 point reviews – is a pristine showing of that very vision. Grown on the Oakville Ranch Vineyard, in the eastern hills of Napa Valley, and farmed by the famed Phil Coturri, the grapes grow on a plateau ranging 800 to 1,400 feet elevation and among red, volcanic soils with good drainage. The team said of this wine in particular, .“In our fourteen years of working with this much-coveted site, it stands amongst the finest of vintages.” 2021 provided slightly above-average warm days, but cool nights and mornings, with a dry spring and sweeping summer diurnal temperatures, providing a limited yield but massive structure and beautiful grapes.

Rounded out with 16% cabernet franc grown on the same site, this cabernet sauvignon ages for 18 months in French oak before bottling without fining or filtration in May 2023. Though in its youth, it’s an absolutely magnificent wine to sip on already, with a promise to somehow get even better as it sits over the next 10 to 20 years (and perhaps longer, if you can manage to wait). It’s rich and boisterous, yet silky, harmonious, and polished, with aromas of dried herbs, violets, and blackberries emerging from the glass. The palate continues with complex, inky-dark notes of black olive tapenade, black currants, more blackberries, some black peppercorn, cedar bark, dried lavender, and a touch of mocha, with whisper-soft tannins and a pure, layered, elegant style. There’s not much Gallica could do that we wouldn’t absolutely fawn over – but we must say, this might be one of the best wines we’ve tried from them! Get at LEAST two for the price drop to under $130, and three to snag free shipping...but if it were us, we’d load up on as much as possible!

PAIRING IDEAS: It’s still summer, so grill up a skirt steak with a simple soy sauce marinade, topped with a bright chimichurri and a grilled romaine Caesar salad on the side for a fresh, yet rich and decadent meal that will allow this Oakville cab to shine.

About the Producer

Gallica is nestled in the heart of Napa Valley amongst historic vineyards, coastal oaks, our gardens and olives. Heritage Petite Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon are rooted in gravelly Cortina soils ambling off nearby Sulphur Creek. Our home is a handsome barn, contemporary and fresh, standing side by side with weathered vines. We strive to practice lightly touching the land from the tending of our vines, thoughtful winemaking methods, to the simplicity of our packaging, Winemaker Rosemary Cakebread's vision for a wine of her own, eventually called GALLICA, grew slowly. Inspired by earlier work at prestigious properties in both Napa Valley and Bordeaux (Cheval Blanc), wines were made and a brand grew. The philosophy is a simple one: to craft elegant single vineyard wines farmed organically which accurately depict the site and the story of each unique vintage. GALLICA makes Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Albarino, Syrah and limited bottlings of estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah. The brand symbol is a tribute to the ancient rose, their aromatics, and enhancement to winemaking. We love what we do and are fortunate to call Napa Valley home.
