Jubilation by COLGIN Red Wine Napa Valley 2021
Colgin Cellars has been around since 1992 and was one of the early trailblazers for micro-produced, hand-crafted California wines. The picturesque winery, set amid the famed Pritchard Hill, was completed in 2002, and although it’s technically within St. Helena’s city limits, the terroir is more similar to that of eastern Oakville, located just a few hundred feet above it to the east. Colgin’s three hillside vineyards produce small but exceptional yields, allowing for age-worthy and pristinely concentrated wines to be developed from the fruits cared for here.
Jubilation is the winery’s newest creation – a cabernet-based Bordeaux wine pulling fruit from all three of the estate’s vineyards and meant to be enjoyed instantly, though powerful enough to age if so desired. The 2021 is a combination of 53% cabernet sauvignon, 26% merlot, 13% cabernet franc, and 8% petit verdot – grown in an epically fantastic season that emerged with small, highly concentrated berries with immeasurable flavor. The craftsmanship is apparent from the first swirl and sip – this needs minimal aeration or decanting, and still opens with an enchanting cacophony of blackberry jam, black cherry, and red plum, followed by a shower of cinnamon, all-spice, bay leaf, vanilla, and clove, and then some crunchy gravel, pencil lead, and is that a hint of German chocolate cake? Man, just a perfect combination of rich, dark fruit, minerality, herbaceousness, acidity, and warmth, with the silkiest of tannins and a splendidly long finish. Simply exceptional stuff from a producer who clearly knows what they’re doing!
