Shafer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select Stags Leap District Napa Valley 2003 - First Bottle

Reviews

96 Wine Enthusiast -
Solidly in the Hillside Select model, this vigorous young Cab is dramatically ripe and powerful. The flavors of red and black currants, milk chocolate, figs and smoky vanilla erupt in the mouth, making the tastebuds jump with joy. However, there is also the structure, among the greatest in California Cabs. The acidity is fine, but the tannins are stupendously rich, sweet and complex, practically a food group in themselves. *Best of 2008, Cellar Selection

The 2003 Hillside Select presents layers of blackberry, plum, and earthy notes with a hint of leather. It’s rich and velvety, with a long, concentrated finish and beautifully integrated tannins.

About the Producer

John Shafer uprooted his family from Chicago in 1972, and bought 209 acres in what would later become Stag's Leap District. He quickly planted a small parcel of Cabernet in the hillsides above the winery at the advice of Nathan Fay and created his first wine from that planting in 1978, a precursor to their legendary Hillside Select. John's son Doug joined the family biz in 1983 and has helped shepard the winery into the international limelight.
