The West Oak Knoll area where we live is one of the classic Chardonnay spots in Napa - Chardonnay from just behind us won the famous Paris tasting in 1976. The cool winds off the San Pablo Bay bring acidity and freshness, while the Napa sun gives flesh and ripeness. The 25-year old vines were originally planted by Beringer, and we’re proud to take our turn caring for them as the vineyard develops maturity. Certified Organic."

They don’t make big, fat wines for their own label -- this Chardonnay, from the cooler side of West Oak Knoll, is literally in Steve and Jill’s backyard and is meticulously farmed. It is picked in multiple passes, the earlier picks for minerality and acidity, the later ones for fruit, flesh and richness. This wine really does have it all and it clocks in at just 12.2%! It’s crisp and fresh and piquant, but amazingly blends the sensation of something richer. Lush baked apple, zesty citrus, pie crust...all in a light, balanced, clean frame. SO GOOD! We can’t think of a better Chardonnay to drink this summer.

Matthiasson is run by two farmers, husband and wife Steve and Jill Matthiasson. Steve is the viticulturist and winemaker and Jill runs the business side of the operations while also farming a number of fruit trees which she sells at select farmers’ markets in Napa.
