Abreu Cabernet Sauvignon Rothwell Hyde 2016 - First Bottle

Reviews

96 James Suckling -
A very serious, tight red with currant, chocolate and brambleberry character, as well as orange peel. Full-bodied, refined and focused. Beautiful, polished sensibility. Already delicious, but better in a year or two.
94 Vinous -
The 2016 Rothwell Hyde is a gorgeous wine to drink now, for readers who can find it. Soft and elegant with silky tannins and fabulous balance, the 2016 has so much to offer already. Black cherry, mocha, espresso, licorice, lavender and spice contribute aromatic nuance, but more than anything else, the 2016 is racy and open-knit, with tons of immediacy. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this gem.

Too late, we are SOLD OUT!
Yes, the uber-rare Rothwell Hyde 2016 (96 points) is in the house (all 18 bottles!) and this is THE vintage to buy. First come, first served…! So small in production and so allocated, we were lucky to get any at all, but with the lack of restaurants and tasting room sales, well, we actually got some! Legendary vineyard manager, David Abreu, makes world-class Cabernet with winemaker Brad Grimes, and this wine is a must for serious collectors. We only wish we had more to offer!

About the Producer

Early on, it was all about the vineyards. Making wine didn't happen until 1986, when David tried his hand with a few barrels of Cabernet from Madrona Ranch. He never released the wine. He'd always heard the first release can make or break you, and the '86 just wasn't good enough. So '87 was the first Abreu wine David sold. “I'd leave bottles at restaurants around the valley and tell them to drink it with their staff. ‘If you like it, call me.’” And the rest is history.

That’s how it all began. A close observer, David had the opportunity to learn from some of the best. Winemakers who understood, as he did, that it was all about the vineyards, the soils, the fruit. As for the winemaking, he got a lot of advice, listened to it all, and then carved his own path. Made wine the way he thought it should be made.

Some people shook their heads. Wondered why he went to such lengths. But it's the same approach he takes in the vineyards. He just does what he feels, in his gut, is right.
